Chapter 12 - The March of the Heirs

Three pairs of rapid, chaotic footsteps pattered across the rich Persian rug, shattering the contemplative silence of the study with the pure, untamed energy of childhood.
“Daddy! Daddy!”
Three-year-old Theo scrambled frantically toward my desk, using the carved legs as a climbing ladder before hoisting himself directly onto my lap with boundless, irrepressible enthusiasm. Right on his heels came Miles, wielding a bright blue plastic toy sword high over his shoulder like a seasoned infantry knight ready to storm a castle keep. Trailing behind them with serene, unbothered grace walked Nora, the calmest and most observant of the three, holding a small silver rattle that she had somehow inherited from Sophie’s early childhood collection.
Before I could properly settle Theo into a secure position, the secondary doors opened wider, and seven-year-old Sophie stepped into the room. She wore a bright yellow cardigan over her dress, looking every bit the poised young lady as she carried a stack of freshly drawn crayon masterpieces.
“And what kind of kingdom are we conquering today, gentlemen?” I asked, a rare, genuine smile breaking across my face as I looked down at my sons.
“We’re taking the kitchen!” Miles declared proudly, striking a theatrical, heroic pose with his plastic sword. “Nora said the cookies are unprotected and the perimeter defense is down!”
I let out a deep, resonant laugh that echoed through the high-ceilinged study. I looked down at Nora, who stood quietly beside my chair, tilting her head up at me with those piercing, luminous eyes that seemed capable of seeing right through steel walls, encrypted code, and human deceit.
Without breaking eye contact with me, Nora gave her small silver rattle a single, deliberate shake.

Clink.
At the exact sound of the metal, the heavy oak doors to the study automatically swung shut behind them, locking themselves with a soft, pneumatic click. Outside, the smart-security monitors embedded in the mahogany trim flashed a vibrant green, confirming that the estate perimeter was locked down, the biometric shields were active, and our sanctuary was completely sealed from the outside world.
