Chapter 13 - The Secret Language of Stone and Steel

I reached down, lifting Nora onto my free knee and pressing a gentle kiss to the top of her dark, curly hair. She leaned against my chest, her tiny fingers tracing the gold signet ring on my right hand—the mark of the Moretti patriarch, a symbol that commanded fear and respect across continents. Yet, to these four children, it was nothing more than a shiny trinket belonging to their father.
“You’ve secured the kitchen?” I asked Nora softly, whispering as if discussing a classified military campaign.
She nodded solemnly, her gaze shifting toward Sophie, who stepped forward to lay her stack of drawings across the corner of my legal briefs.
“This one is the dragon guarding the pantry,” Sophie explained, pointing a small finger at a surprisingly sophisticated drawing of a scaly green monster wrapped around a cookie jar. “And this one is Uncle Miller trying to negotiate a peace treaty with the toaster.”
I picked up the drawing, studying the crude yet expressive lines. Miller, who commanded cyber-intelligence networks and orbital defense grids across three time zones, would undoubtedly be thrilled to know his diplomatic skills had been immortalized in crayon.
“We’ll have to brief Miller immediately,” I said with a straight face. “A rogue toaster is a serious security threat to the household.”

Theo squealed with delight, bouncing on my knee, while Miles brandished his plastic sword at an imaginary adversary near the bookshelf. For anyone looking in from the outside—any cartel boss, international rival, or federal agent who believed the Moretti name was built entirely on ruthlessness—this scene would have been utterly incomprehensible. They saw a monster who had conquered the underworld; Clara and our children saw a man who had finally learned how to build something worth protecting.
The estate around us hummed with a quiet, subterranean power. Beneath the manicured lawns and autumn gardens lay miles of reinforced tunnels, server farms, and defensive installations, all operating in perfect harmony to ensure that nothing could ever threaten the peace we had fought so hard to carve out of the dark.
