Chapter 6 - The Truth Behind the Disappearance

"Because Adrian is the reason your mother disappeared."

Victoria's words remained frozen on the screen.

Nobody spoke.

The room felt like it had lost all oxygen.

I looked at Adrian.

Waiting.

Hoping.

Not for an explanation.

For him to tell me it was a lie.

But Adrian did not say anything.

And that silence hurt more than the accusation.

"Say something."

My voice was quiet.

Adrian looked at me.

"Elena..."

"No."

I shook my head.

"Don't say my name like that."

The pain in his eyes was real.

But I had learned something that night.

Real emotions did not always mean the truth.

"Did you know my mother?"

Adrian looked down.

"Yes."

The answer hit harder than I expected.

I stepped back.

"How?"

He took a slow breath.

"Years before I met you, your mother was investigating my family."

Claire immediately looked at him.

"Adrian."

He ignored her.

"She found information about my father."

"What kind of information?"

Adrian looked toward the screen.

"The kind that could destroy powerful people."

The video continued playing.

Victoria's face appeared again.

She looked older.

Tired.

Like someone who had spent years running.

"Elena, I don't know if Adrian will show you this message."

Her voice trembled.

"But if you are watching it, then I failed."

I moved closer to the screen.

My own name coming from her mouth felt impossible.

"Your mother trusted me."

I turned.

Claire had spoken.

I looked at her.

"What?"

She looked away.

"I was the person who helped her hide."

My heart sank.

"You knew my mother too?"

Claire nodded.

"She was trying to expose something."

"What?"

Claire looked at Adrian.

Then back at me.

"Your mother's investigation was about the Vale family."

I stared at Adrian.

The man I married.

The man I trusted.

The man who now seemed surrounded by ghosts from my past.

"And you never told me."

His expression changed.

"I didn't know how."

I laughed softly.

Again, not because it was funny.

Because the situation was impossible.

"You didn't know how to tell me that your family was connected to mine?"

Adrian stepped closer.

"I was trying to find the truth before bringing you into it."

"You brought me into it the moment you married me."

The words hurt him.

I saw it.

But they were true.

Claire walked toward the table.

"There is something else."

She placed a small object beside the photographs.

A necklace.

Old.

Silver.

With a small broken pendant.

I immediately recognized it.

My mother had owned one exactly like it.

"Where did you get that?"

Claire looked at me.

"Your mother gave it to me the night she disappeared."

My hands became cold.

"What?"

"She told me if anything happened to her, I had to find you."

I stared at the pendant.

A thousand questions entered my mind.

"Why didn't you?"

Claire looked guilty.

"Because someone found me first."

The room became silent.

"Who?"

She didn't answer.

She didn't need to.

Because Adrian already knew.

His expression changed.

"It was him."

I looked at Adrian.

"Who?"

He walked toward the window.

His reflection appeared in the dark glass.

"My father."

Nobody spoke.

I watched him carefully.

"The man who disappeared."

Adrian nodded.

"The man everyone thought was dead."

My heart stopped.

"Your father is alive?"

Before he could answer, every light in the building turned off.

The emergency system activated.

Red lights flashed again.

Adrian immediately moved.

His entire body changed.

The husband disappeared.

The dangerous man returned.

"Everyone down."

Claire lowered herself behind the table.

I stood frozen.

Then I heard it.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Calm.

Coming from outside the conference room.

Adrian reached for the weapon hidden beneath his jacket.

The footsteps stopped.

A voice came from the other side of the door.

"Adrian."

He froze.

Not because he was afraid.

Because he recognized the voice.

I looked at him.

"Who is that?"

He didn't answer.

The voice spoke again.

"You spent years pretending I was gone."

The door handle moved.

Slowly.

Adrian stepped in front of me.

The lock clicked.

Once.

Twice.

Then the voice whispered:

"Open the door, son."

My heart stopped.

Because Adrian had spent his entire life saying one thing.

His father was dead.

May you like

The door opened.

And the man standing outside was the person Adrian had buried twenty years ago.
