Chapter 1 - The Woman Everyone Thought Was Alone

Julian Mercer pointed at my wedding ring and laughed: "Where's your husband, Elena?"
The entire ballroom went silent.
I was standing beside a massive architectural model in the center of the Grand Aurelia ballroom, surrounded by three hundred guests who had come to celebrate the biggest development project of the year.
Investors.
Architects.
Reporters.
Powerful people who smiled for cameras during the day and destroyed reputations behind closed doors at night.
And in the middle of them all stood me.
Elena Hart.
The woman everyone thought had been abandoned.
Julian looked around the room like he was performing on a stage.
He loved attention.
He loved watching people laugh with him.
Especially when the person being humiliated was someone who could not fight back.
He adjusted his cream-colored suit jacket and stepped closer.
His eyes dropped to the platinum ring on my finger.
A ring nobody in that room understood.
A ring that carried a story nobody knew.
"You still wear it?" Julian asked with a cruel smile.
A few guests exchanged uncomfortable looks.
I lowered my hand slowly.
"I don't understand why you care," I replied.
Julian laughed.
That laugh was the same one I remembered from years ago.
The laugh of a man who believed money could fix every mistake.
"I care because everyone here deserves to know the truth."
He turned toward the crowd.
"Elena has been pretending she has a powerful husband for months."
Whispers spread through the room.
I felt dozens of eyes on me.
"But nobody has ever seen him."
Julian smiled wider.
"So tell me, Elena."
He looked directly into my eyes.
"Where is your husband?"
I remained silent.
Not because I was afraid.
Because I knew something Julian didn't.
He thought he was exposing me.
He thought he was destroying my reputation.
But he had no idea that the person he was searching for had been standing behind me the entire time.
Three years earlier, I had married a man most people believed was nothing more than a rumor.
A man whose name made criminals disappear.
A man whose enemies never lived long enough to tell stories about him.
Adrian Vale.
The most feared businessman in the underground world.
The man newspapers called a ghost.
The man my husband.
But I had never wanted his power.
I had never wanted his enemies.
I only wanted the quiet life he promised me.
That was why we kept our marriage private.
No photographs.
No interviews.
No public appearances.
Only a small circle of trusted people knew the truth.
Julian didn't know.
And now he believed that secret was his weapon.
"I think everyone deserves honesty," Julian continued.
"You spent years acting like you married someone important."
He pointed at my ring.
"But maybe there is no husband."
A few people looked away.
Others watched with curiosity.
I took a slow breath.
"Are you finished?"
The question surprised him.
For a moment, his smile disappeared.
Then he laughed again.
"You really think you can stand here and pretend?"
He stepped closer.
"Your mysterious husband isn't coming."
The room became colder.
Not because of his words.
Because of the silence behind me.
A silence Julian didn't notice.
A silence that meant someone had stopped moving.
Someone had stopped breathing.
Someone powerful was listening.
I looked at Julian calmly.
"You should be careful what you say next."
He smiled.
"Or what?"
I didn't answer.
Because at that exact moment, several guests near the entrance suddenly stepped aside.
Not because they recognized me.
Because they recognized the man walking toward us.
The man who had entered the ballroom without making a sound.
May you like
The man Julian had spent the entire night searching for.
And when Julian finally saw who was standing behind me, his smile slowly disappeared.
