Chapter 2 - The Man Who Walked Out of the Shadows

Adrian Vale had never needed an introduction.
His reputation arrived before him.
The moment he stepped forward, conversations stopped.
Reporters lowered their cameras.
Investors stopped pretending to be interested in their champagne.
Even people who had spent years inside powerful circles suddenly remembered they had somewhere else to be.
Because everyone knew one thing.
Adrian Vale was not a man people challenged.
Julian stared at him.
The confidence disappeared from his face.
"Who are you?"
Adrian ignored the question.
His eyes moved toward me first.
Not Julian.
Me.
That was the difference.
Julian looked at me like I was something he owned.
Adrian looked at me like I was someone he protected.
"Are you alright?" he asked quietly.
I nodded.
"Now I am."
The entire room watched the exchange.
Julian swallowed.
He tried to recover his confidence.
"Elena, who is this?"
I almost smiled.
Because after all those months of mocking me, after all those accusations, Julian finally asked the only question that mattered.
Adrian stepped beside me.
Then he looked at Julian.
"My wife."
Two words.
That was all.
But they hit the room harder than any speech.
A reporter immediately raised a camera.
Someone whispered my name.
Someone else whispered his.
Julian looked around desperately.
"No."
He shook his head.
"That's impossible."
Adrian's expression didn't change.
"Why?"
Julian had no answer.
Because the truth was standing right in front of him.
The woman he tried to embarrass was not alone.
She had never been alone.
Julian forced a laugh.
"Everyone knows Elena was never married publicly."
Adrian looked at him.
"Publicly?"
A small smile appeared on his face.
"Is that what matters to you?"
Julian became uncomfortable.
Because for the first time that night, he was not controlling the conversation.
Adrian reached into his jacket and removed a small black folder.
He placed it on the table.
Inside were documents.
Marriage records.
Private agreements.
Proof.
Julian's face changed.
But Adrian didn't stop.
"There is something else."
He opened the folder.
And placed a photograph on the table.
It was a picture of Julian.
Taken three months earlier.
Julian froze.
"Where did you get that?"
Adrian looked at him carefully.
"That's the question you should be asking yourself."
I looked at the photograph.
I didn't understand.
But I recognized the fear in Julian's eyes.
This was not embarrassment.
This was panic.
Adrian leaned closer to me.
"Elena, we need to leave."
I looked at him.
"Why?"
His expression became serious.
"Because this was never about humiliating you."
A second later, every phone in the ballroom vibrated at the same time.
Hundreds of screens lit up.
Everyone looked down.
Everyone received the same message.
One sentence.
One warning.
"The woman you trust most has been lying to you."
My heart stopped.
Because attached to the message was a photograph.
A photograph of someone I knew.
Someone who should not have been there.
May you like
Someone who had been missing for years.
And then Adrian whispered the name I never expected to hear again...
