Chapter 4 - The Woman Who Knew His Name

The woman stepped closer.

The red emergency lights flashed across her face.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Not Adrian.

Not me.

Not even the security team standing behind us.

Because everyone in that hallway recognized something impossible.

She was not a stranger.

She was someone who belonged to a chapter of our lives that had already been closed.

Her eyes stayed on me.

Not Adrian.

Me.

"Elena Hart."

Hearing my full name from her mouth made my chest tighten.

I had never met her.

But somehow, she looked at me like she had known me for years.

Adrian moved slightly in front of me.

"Claire."

The woman's expression changed.

A small, sad smile appeared.

"So you still remember me."

Adrian's voice became colder.

"How did you get inside?"

Claire looked around the hallway.

"That's your first question?"

Her eyes moved toward me.

"Not why I came?"

Adrian said nothing.

And that silence told me there was a history between them.

A history he had never mentioned.

I stepped beside him.

"Who is she?"

Claire looked at me.

Then she looked at Adrian.

"You didn't tell her."

It wasn't a question.

It was an accusation.

My heart sank.

Adrian's jaw tightened.

"Not here."

Claire laughed quietly.

"That's exactly what you always say."

The hallway became painfully silent.

I looked between them.

"Someone please explain what is happening."

Adrian turned toward me.

"Elena—"

"No."

My voice was calm.

But I was done waiting.

"I stood in front of hundreds of people tonight while my ex-husband tried to destroy me."

I looked at him.

"Then I found out someone hacked security systems, someone sent me a warning, and now a woman from your past appears saying I was never supposed to marry you."

I took a breath.

"I think I deserve some answers."

Adrian looked at me for several seconds.

Then he nodded.

"You do."

Claire watched him carefully.

Almost like she was surprised he finally admitted it.

Adrian looked at his security team.

"Clear this floor."

The men immediately moved.

Within seconds, the hallway emptied.

Only the three of us remained.

The silence felt heavier than before.

Adrian walked toward a private conference room nearby.

The door opened.

Inside was a dark room filled with monitors showing different parts of the ballroom.

The perfect place for secrets.

The perfect place for people like Adrian.

I walked inside.

Claire followed.

She looked at the screens.

"You still built everything around control."

Adrian closed the door.

"You came here to warn her."

Claire looked at me.

"Yes."

"Why?"

Claire hesitated.

Then she reached into her coat.

Everyone became tense.

Adrian's hand moved slightly.

Ready.

But Claire only pulled out a small envelope.

Old.

Worn.

The paper looked like it had been hidden for years.

She placed it on the table.

My name was written on the front.

Elena Hart.

I stared at it.

"Why is my name on that?"

Claire looked at Adrian.

"Because she deserves to know what happened before she met you."

Adrian's face hardened.

"Don't."

Claire ignored him.

"Three years ago, before your wedding, Adrian was not just hiding from enemies."

I looked at Adrian.

"What does that mean?"

Claire opened the envelope slightly.

Inside was a photograph.

She placed it on the table.

I picked it up.

It was Adrian.

But younger.

Different.

He was standing beside another man.

A man I didn't recognize.

Behind them was a building.

A building that looked abandoned.

On the back of the photo were handwritten words.

"The last place Adrian Vale disappeared."

I looked up.

"What is this?"

Claire answered.

"That is where Adrian stopped being someone who existed."

I looked at my husband.

He didn't deny it.

That scared me.

"Adrian?"

He looked away.

"I thought I buried that part of my life."

Claire shook her head.

"You didn't bury it."

She looked at me.

"You ran from it."

The room became silent.

I placed the photograph down.

"What does any of this have to do with me?"

Claire took another breath.

"Everything."

My stomach tightened.

"Explain."

She looked at Adrian.

"Tell her about the night you met."

Adrian didn't move.

"Claire."

"No."

Her voice became sharper.

"You don't get to protect her by lying anymore."

I looked at Adrian.

"The night we met?"

I remembered it clearly.

A rainy evening.

A small restaurant.

A man sitting alone in the corner.

A man who looked dangerous but spoke gently to me.

A man who told me his name was Adrian.

Nothing else.

I had always believed it was a coincidence.

But now I wasn't sure.

Claire pushed the envelope toward me.

"Read the letter."

I hesitated.

Then I opened it.

The handwriting was unfamiliar.

But the first sentence made my blood run cold.

"If Elena Hart is reading this, Adrian failed to keep her away from the truth."

I stopped breathing.

I looked at Adrian.

His face had lost all color.

"You knew about this letter."

He didn't answer.

That was enough.

"You knew."

"Elena, listen to me."

"No."

I stepped back.

"How long?"

Adrian looked at me.

"How long did you know someone was watching me?"

His silence answered.

Claire looked away.

Almost sadly.

"He didn't tell you because he was afraid."

I laughed softly.

"Afraid of what?"

Nobody answered.

I looked back at the letter.

The next line was visible.

"The woman you love is connected to the reason you became Adrian Vale."

My fingers tightened around the paper.

"What does that mean?"

Adrian finally spoke.

"It means someone wanted you near me."

The words hit harder than I expected.

"Someone planned our meeting?"

He looked at me.

"I don't know."

Claire interrupted.

"You do know."

Adrian looked at her.

A warning.

But Claire continued.

"You just don't want to remember."

Suddenly, every monitor in the room went black.

The screens flickered.

The security feed disappeared.

Then one screen turned back on.

A video file opened automatically.

No one touched anything.

The file name appeared.

ELENA_HART_FINAL_MESSAGE

My heart stopped.

Claire stepped back.

Adrian stared at the screen.

"That's impossible."

The video started.

A woman appeared.

A woman sitting in a dark room.

Her face was hidden.

But her voice was clear.

And the moment I heard it, I knew.

Because it was my voice.

The woman on the screen whispered:

"Elena... if you are watching this, it means Adrian failed to keep you safe."

Adrian froze.

The video continued.

"And it means the person who destroyed our lives has finally found you."

The screen suddenly distorted.

A final image appeared.

A person standing behind the woman.

Someone whose face was slowly becoming visible.

Adrian stepped closer.

His expression changed completely.

Because he recognized the person in the video.

May you like

And then he whispered a name I had never heard before...

"Mother."
