Chapter 8 - THE PERSON WHO WANTED THEM ALL TO BLAME ELEANOR

For three days, the scandal swallowed everything.
Reporters camped outside the mansion.
Hale Meridian shares fell eleven percent.
Vanessa’s family accused Julian of using their hospital merger to conceal personal misconduct.
Camila’s face appeared online beside words like SECRET HEIR and BILLIONAIRE MAID.
Rosie was never photographed.
Julian made sure of that.
He moved Camila and Rosie to a secure townhouse registered through an attorney, not a Hale company.
Camila almost refused because accepting his protection felt like dependence.
She accepted because refusing security to prove independence would have made Rosie pay for her pride.
That was growth, and Camila hated how expensive growth felt.
Julian’s security team traced the press leak through a chain of encrypted accounts.
One server touched Northstar Clinical Holdings.
Vanessa’s brother’s company.
Vanessa stared at the report.
“My brother is stupid, not suicidal.”
Julian raised an eyebrow.
“Comforting distinction.”
She called her brother, Grant, on speaker.
He denied ordering the first DNA test manipulation.
Then admitted something worse.
Three years earlier, Thomas Hale had paid Northstar to process the prenatal test quietly.
Six months ago, someone contacted Grant demanding archived copies.
Grant sold them.
“To whom?” Vanessa asked.
“I don’t know.”
“You accepted money from an anonymous buyer for confidential medical records?”
Grant became defensive.
“You married into worse things.”
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Amount?” Julian asked.
“Two hundred thousand.”
Camila whispered, “You sold my daughter’s DNA record.”
Grant went silent.
Vanessa ended the call.
For once, she looked ashamed on behalf of someone other than herself.
Julian traced the payment.
The buyer was a shell company.
That shell company had also hired the staffing agency that placed Camila in the Hale mansion.
Eleanor had recommended Camila.
But she had not paid the agency.
Someone else had ensured Camila would be selected.
Julian pulled the staffing records.
One authorization signature appeared repeatedly.
Miles Kessler.
Julian’s former chief of staff.
The man who, three years earlier, had told Julian that Camila had quit the Harbor Foundation and left no forwarding information.
Julian went completely still.
Camila whispered, “He knew.”
Vanessa said, “He knew everything.”
Miles had worked for Thomas Hale for twelve years before becoming Julian’s chief of staff during Thomas’s illness. After Thomas died, Julian fired him for leaking board strategy to an activist investor.
Miles had disappeared into consulting.
Eleanor’s voice was quiet.
“He blamed you for ending his career.”
Julian looked at the timeline.
Miles had access to Julian’s delegated token.
Miles had known about Thomas’s plan to conceal Rosie.
Miles could have prepared the settlement package.
And if Thomas ordered the concealment, Miles could later claim he was only following instructions.
Vanessa frowned.
“But why wait three years?”
Julian understood first.
“Because until Rosie existed inside the trust structure, the evidence was only scandal.”
Camila followed.
“Now it can move voting control.”
Eleanor nodded slowly.
Miles was not trying merely to embarrass them.
He was trying to destabilize Hale Meridian enough for someone to buy influence cheaply.
Julian’s security chief entered.
“We found a second payment into Kessler’s shell company.”
“From whom?”
The answer shocked even Vanessa.
A hedge fund called Armitage Capital.
The same activist investor group that had tried to break Hale Meridian apart after Thomas’s death.
Miles had engineered conflict among Julian, Vanessa, Camila, and Eleanor to weaken the company before a proxy challenge.
Camila sat down.
“So the birthmark, the job, the blackmail—”
“Not the birthmark,” Julian said. “He could not plan Rosie falling asleep on me.”
“No,” Vanessa replied. “But he could put her in the house and wait.”
That was worse.
Miles had not scripted the scene.
He had built a room where a scene like it would eventually happen.
Julian’s phone buzzed.
Board notice.
Emergency meeting in forty-eight hours.
Armitage Capital had submitted nominations to replace four directors.
And attached to its filing was an affidavit from Miles Kessler.
In it, Miles claimed Julian had personally ordered Camila’s pregnancy concealed.
The affidavit included Julian’s signature.

This time, the signature was not merely digital.
It was handwritten.
