Chapter 3 - THE SECOND DNA TEST

For forty-eight hours, Julian pretended to accept the first result.
It was one of the crueler things he had ever done.
Camila became quieter.
Vanessa became warmer.
That alone confirmed Julian’s suspicion that neither woman trusted the other enough to relax naturally.
At breakfast, Vanessa kissed his cheek.
“You can finally stop looking at me like I committed a felony.”
Julian buttered toast.
“I was looking at you like my wife.”
“That is not better.”
Across the room, Camila poured coffee.
She heard everything.
Julian wanted her to.
He was baiting both women now.
That knowledge disgusted him slightly.
It did not stop him.
That afternoon, he sent his head of security to obtain the collection-room video from Northstar.
The clinic refused.
Vanessa’s brother called within an hour asking why Julian was “harassing a medical provider.”
Julian never told Vanessa he had requested the footage.
So someone at Northstar had called her family.
Interesting.
Meanwhile, Camila was conducting her own investigation.
She searched old emails from the period of her pregnancy and found a message she had ignored years earlier because it landed in spam.
Sender: E. Hale.
Subject: Do not sign anything else.
The message body contained only a phone number.
Camila recognized the initial.
Eleanor Hale.
Julian’s aunt.
The woman who had spent twenty years fighting Thomas Hale over the family trust.
Camila called the number.
Disconnected.
That evening, she confronted Julian.
“Did your aunt know about me?”
His eyes sharpened.
“Why?”
She showed him the email.
Julian read it twice.
“My aunt knows everyone’s weaknesses. She collects them as a hobby.”
“Where is she?”
“Boston.”
“Do you speak?”
“When legally necessary.”
Camila tucked the phone away.
“So she hated your father.”
“They hated each other efficiently.”
Vanessa entered at the wrong moment.
“What are you two doing?”
Camila smiled without warmth.
“Discussing how many Hales knew I was pregnant before Julian did.”
Vanessa’s face barely changed.
Barely.
Julian saw it.
Before he could press, his phone buzzed.
Second DNA test.
The message was from a lab in Seattle, owned by no company connected to the Hale network. Julian had sent his sample under an attorney-managed identification number and Rosie’s sample under another.
He opened the report.
His lungs stopped working for a moment.
Probability of paternity: 99.9997%.
Julian closed his eyes.
When he opened them, Camila was watching.
She understood before he spoke.
“No,” she whispered.
Vanessa stepped closer.
“What?”
Julian turned the screen.
Camila sat down hard.
For three years she had imagined this possibility. She had hated Julian for rejecting Rosie. Then she had begun to suspect someone else had rejected Rosie for him.
Now neither story mattered.
Rosie was his daughter.
Vanessa stared at the report.
“You went behind my back.”
Julian looked at her in disbelief.
“That is your first concern?”
“You used a child’s DNA without telling her mother.”
Camila’s head snapped up.
Vanessa was right.
Julian saw that too.
He looked at Camila.
“I should have told you.”
“Yes.”
“I thought the first test might be compromised.”
“So you compromised me instead.”
“I needed certainty.”
“You needed control.”
The words landed because they were true.
Julian did not defend himself.
Vanessa walked toward the window.
“You have no idea what this means.”
Julian’s voice turned cold.
“I know exactly what it means. I have a daughter.”
“No.”
Vanessa looked back.
“You know what it means emotionally. I’m talking about the Hale trust.”
Camila frowned.
Julian became still.
“What about it?”
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“You really never read the descendant clause.”
Julian knew the founder trust controlled twelve percent of Hale Meridian’s voting stock. He and Vanessa currently exercised the marital proxy together because Julian had no acknowledged biological descendants.
Vanessa continued.
“The moment a biological child is legally recognized, the proxy changes.”
“To whom?” Camila asked.
Vanessa looked at Rosie’s mother.
“To the child’s trust.”
Camila’s face tightened.
“I don’t want his company.”
“That doesn’t matter.”
Julian turned to Vanessa.
“You knew this when you selected Camila for the house.”
Vanessa said nothing.
That silence was answer enough.
Julian stepped toward her.
“How long have you known Rosie’s name?”
Vanessa’s eyes hardened.
“Longer than you have.”
Julian’s jaw flexed.
“How long?”
May you like
Vanessa met his gaze.
“Since before she was born.”
