Chapter 4 - THE WIFE WHO HAD BEEN WAITING THREE YEARS

Camila wanted to hit Vanessa.

She did not.

That mattered.

Three years earlier, Camila would have believed restraint meant weakness. Motherhood had taught her that the person who controlled the next move usually won more than the person who won the next second.

She picked up Rosie and carried her upstairs.

“Where are you going?” Julian asked.

“To put my daughter somewhere she cannot hear adults discuss her like stock.”

He did not stop her.

Twenty minutes later, Camila returned.

Vanessa and Julian were sitting across from each other in the library.

Neither looked married.

They looked like hostile companies at arbitration.

Camila remained standing.

“Start talking.”

Vanessa gave her a thin smile.

“You are remarkably comfortable giving orders in my house.”

“It became less impressive when I learned you invited me into it.”

Julian said, “Vanessa.”

She ignored his warning.

“Fine.”

Three years earlier, after the Harbor gala, Vanessa had still been separated from Julian.

Their engagement had collapsed because Julian discovered Vanessa had secretly negotiated with his father over a merger between Hale Meridian and her family’s failing hospital group.

Vanessa insisted she had been trying to save four hospitals and nine hundred jobs.

Julian called it manipulation.

Both descriptions were true.

Then Thomas Hale became terminally ill.

The board panicked.

Julian and Vanessa reconciled partly because they loved each other and partly because their marriage stabilized two intertwined business empires.

“I knew about Camila before the wedding,” Vanessa said.

Julian’s expression hardened.

“How?”

“Your father.”

The room went quiet.

Vanessa continued.

“Thomas knew you slept with her. His security people knew everything you did that month. When Camila contacted the office saying she was pregnant, Thomas intercepted it.”

Camila’s fingers curled.

“And the payment?”

“I helped process it.”

Julian stood.

“You forged my authorization.”

“No.”

Vanessa stood too.

“You signed the batch.”

“I did not know what was in it.”

“That is not the same as not signing.”

Julian went silent.

Again, she was right in the narrowest and most painful way.

Vanessa looked at Camila.

“Thomas wanted certainty before telling Julian. He ordered a prenatal paternity test.”

Camila frowned.

“I never took one.”

“No. He used preserved material from Julian’s fertility screening and obtained fetal DNA from blood you gave at your obstetric clinic.”

Camila went pale.

“That is impossible.”

“Unethical,” Vanessa corrected. “Not impossible.”

Julian looked sick.

“What did the result say?”

Vanessa hesitated.

“Positive.”

Camila closed her eyes.

Julian whispered, “My father knew.”

“Yes.”

“And you knew.”

“Yes.”

“Then why pay her to leave?”

Vanessa’s composure finally cracked.

“Because if you acknowledged a child before Thomas died, the founder proxy would move out of his control immediately. He was negotiating emergency financing. The lenders required stable voting control.”

Camila laughed in disbelief.

“So my baby was a covenant problem.”

“To Thomas? Yes.”

“To you?” Julian asked.

Vanessa looked at him.

“To me, Rosie was the thing that could destroy the only deal keeping my mother’s hospitals alive.”

There it was.

Not jealousy alone.

Not money alone.

Vanessa had helped erase Rosie because hundreds of employees and her own family’s medical network depended on the Hale financing.

That did not make it right.

It made it complicated enough to survive an argument.

Julian sat down slowly.

“Why bring Camila here now?”

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“Because someone started blackmailing me.”

Camila stared.

“With what?”

“Copies of the prenatal test. The original settlement letter. Trust documents.”

Julian’s eyes narrowed.

“How much?”

“Five million.”

“And you didn’t tell me.”

“You were already preparing to remove me from the marital proxy.”

Camila looked between them.

Julian said nothing.

Vanessa smiled bitterly.

“You see? He has secrets too.”

Camila turned to Julian.

“What is she talking about?”

Julian’s jaw tightened.

“I had attorneys review a separation.”

“Divorce?”

“Yes.”

Vanessa continued.

“He planned to file after the annual meeting, when he no longer needed my family’s votes.”

Julian did not deny it.

Camila felt something inside her recalibrate.

Julian had been betrayed.

He had also been betraying.

Vanessa had manipulated.

She had also been protecting institutions that would have collapsed without her.

Camila had been silenced.

She had also taken the money and disappeared without forcing the question.

Nobody in the room was innocent enough to be simple.

Vanessa reached into her handbag and placed a printed email on the table.

“The blackmailer sent this yesterday.”

Julian read it.

Recognize the girl before Friday, or I release everything to the board.

No signature.

Camila saw the sender domain.

Her breath caught.

It was routed through an old Hale family server.

The same server used by only one branch of the family after Thomas died.

Julian looked up.

“Aunt Eleanor.”

Then Camila remembered the spam email she received during pregnancy.

Do not sign anything else.

And she realized Vanessa had not been the only person watching her for three years.
