Chapter 5 - THE AUNT WHO WANTED THE TRUTH FOR HER OWN REASONS

Eleanor Hale arrived the next morning without being invited.
That was how Eleanor did most things.
She was sixty-one, silver-haired, elegantly severe, and entirely unimpressed by Julian’s security team.
When she entered the library, Vanessa looked at her as if she had brought poison.
Eleanor smiled.
“Still dramatic, Vanessa.”
“You blackmailed me.”
“I applied pressure.”
“Five million dollars is pressure?”
“I needed to know which secret you valued more: Rosie or your money.”
Camila stepped forward.
“You emailed me three years ago.”
Eleanor looked at her carefully.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Thomas was trying to bury you.”
“And you wanted to help?”
Eleanor’s smile disappeared.
“No. I wanted evidence.”
The honesty stunned Camila.
Eleanor sat without invitation.
“Thomas had been manipulating the founder trust for years. He treated family governance like private property. Your pregnancy gave me proof he was willing to conceal a descendant to retain proxy control.”
Julian’s expression hardened.
“So Rosie was evidence to you.”
“At first.”
Camila stared.
“And later?”
Eleanor looked toward the ceiling, where faint footsteps from the nursery could be heard.
“Later she became a child, which complicated my certainty.”
Vanessa laughed.
“That may be the closest thing Eleanor has to a confession.”
Eleanor ignored her.
She produced a folder containing the original prenatal test.
99.98% probability.
Camila’s eyes burned.
Three years of doubt disappeared into a number someone else had hidden.
Julian read every page.
“Why didn’t you send this to me?”
“Because three years ago you were your father’s son.”
Julian’s face went cold.
“And now?”
“Now you are merely a different kind of dangerous.”
Eleanor turned to Camila.
“You came back into this house to verify the settlement, yes?”
Camila hesitated.
“Yes.”
“Not only that.”
Vanessa looked intrigued.
Julian looked suspicious.
Camila’s stomach tightened.
Eleanor continued.
“Tell them.”
Camila hated being cornered.
But she had spent three years demanding truth from people who had protected themselves with silence.
She could not now hide behind the same weapon.
“I contacted Eleanor six months ago.”
Julian’s face changed.
“What?”
Camila looked at him.
“I found her old email. I tracked down her office. She told me she had evidence the settlement was fraudulent.”
“And she placed you with our staffing agency.”
Camila nodded.
Vanessa whispered, “So you did infiltrate the house.”
“Yes.”
Camila did not soften it.
“I wanted the original records. I wanted to know whether Julian knew. And if he did know, I wanted proof before he could bury me again.”
Julian stared at her.
“You brought Rosie here as part of an investigation.”
“I brought Rosie because I could not afford full-time childcare.”
“That is not the whole answer.”
“No.”
Camila’s eyes hardened.
“I also wanted to see what kind of man you were before deciding whether you deserved to know her.”
Julian stood.
“You decided whether I deserved to know my daughter?”
“Yes.”
“You hated my father for making that decision for us.”
Camila flinched.
Julian saw it.
“Tell me I’m wrong.”
She could not.
Eleanor watched them with unsettling calm.
Vanessa noticed.
“This is what you wanted,” she said to Eleanor. “All of us fighting until you can step in as trustee.”
Eleanor’s expression sharpened.
“I want the founder trust obeyed.”
“You want control of the proxy.”
“I want it removed from people who treat children as transaction variables.”
Vanessa laughed.
“That includes you.”
For the first time, Eleanor had no answer.
Julian closed the folder.
“No one is using Rosie’s shares.”
Eleanor stood.
“You may not have a choice.”
“What does that mean?”
“The descendant clause is automatic once paternity is legally recognized. Until Rosie turns twenty-five, someone must serve as voting trustee.”
Camila said, “Her parent.”
Eleanor shook her head.
“Not if the parents are in conflict or one parent concealed paternity.”
Vanessa’s face changed.
Julian understood immediately.
“You already filed something.”
Eleanor picked up her gloves.
“A petition for interim independent trusteeship.”
“Independent?” Vanessa said. “Meaning you.”
Eleanor did not smile.
“I am eligible.”
Camila stepped closer.
“You used me to create standing.”
“I helped you uncover the truth.”
“For your own reason.”
“Yes.”
Again, that brutal honesty.
Eleanor walked toward the door.
Julian’s phone buzzed.
His attorney.
Emergency family court filing.
He opened the attached petition.
Eleanor had included evidence against everyone.
Vanessa’s settlement scheme.
Julian’s secret DNA test.
Camila’s infiltration of the household.
And one final exhibit Camila had never seen.
A signed declaration from Julian himself, dated two months earlier.
It stated that he had reason to suspect Rosie might be his biological child.
Camila looked at him slowly.
“You knew before the birthmark.”

Julian did not answer.
That was enough.
