Chapter 6 - The Breach

The explosive charge shattered the mahogany paneling and warped the steel door underneath.
Smoke filled the opulent hallway of my home.
Victor stepped through the smoke, coughing and waving his gun.
"Come out, Elena," he mocked, his voice echoing in the destroyed corridor.
Inside the suite, Elena shielded Sophia with her own body behind a heavy oak desk.
Before Victor's men could step inside the room, the floorboards behind them exploded.
Gabriel and his tactical team erupted from the hidden service elevator.
The firefight lasted exactly twelve seconds.
Gabriel's men moved with lethal, synchronized precision.
Victor's mercenaries dropped to the floor, their blood staining my expensive Persian rugs.
Victor managed to dive behind a marble pillar, narrowly escaping a bullet to the chest.
Realizing he was completely outgunned, the coward turned and ran.
He fled down the grand staircase, sprinting toward the garage.
Gabriel secured the room, standing protectively over the terrified mother and child.
"Are you hurt?" Gabriel asked, his gruff voice surprisingly gentle.
"We are okay," Elena sobbed, holding Sophia tightly.
Gabriel tapped his earpiece.
"Boss, the package is secure," he reported.
"The rat is running toward the south gate."
I smiled in the darkness of the safehouse.

"Let him run," I replied softly.
"He is running exactly where I want him to go."
