Chapter 10 - A New Dawn
I sat down on the cold stone bench next to the little girl in the yellow sweater.
She looked up at me, holding a bright blue crayon in her tiny hand.
"Are the bad men gone?" Sophia asked directly.
"Yes, little one," I answered, my voice softer than it had been in decades.
"The bad men are all gone, and they will never come back."
I reached into my coat pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box.
I handed it to Elena, who opened it with shaking hands.
Inside was a flawless, custom-made diamond pendant in the shape of a shield.
"I owe you my life," I told the stunned mother.
"From this day forward, you are no longer my employees."
"You are under the absolute, permanent protection of the Moretti family."
"Your daughter will go to the best schools, and you will want for absolutely nothing."
Elena covered her mouth, tears of overwhelming gratitude spilling down her cheeks.
Sophia tugged on my sleeve, interrupting the emotional moment.
"I made this for you," she said, handing me her drawing.
It was a picture of a tall man holding the hand of a little girl.
In the corner, she had drawn a bright yellow sun.
I folded the paper carefully and placed it in my inner pocket, right over my heart.
