Chapter 9 - The Declaration on the Lawn

By 5:00 PM, the autumn sun was dipping below the horizon, casting a brilliant golden light across the manicured lawns of the Greenwich estate.
When Adrian’s sleek black sedan pulled up the grand driveway, Mia was already outside, running across the soft green grass in her signature yellow rain boots, chasing a monarch butterfly.
Elena stood near the stone fountain, wearing her burgundy dress, watching her daughter with a peaceful, beautiful smile.
Adrian stepped out of the car. He removed his suit jacket, tossing it onto the hood, and unbuttoned his top collar.
"ADRIAN!" Mia shrieked happily, changing directions and sprinting toward him as fast as her small legs could carry her.
Adrian crouched down, opening his arms wide, and caught her in mid-air, spinning her around while she giggled uncontrollably.
"Did you look at my picture when you were grumpy?" Mia asked, hugging his neck tightly.
"I looked at it three times," Adrian smiled, setting her down gently on the grass. "It worked. Everyone was very polite."
Mia nodded approvingly. "Good." She then spotted a colorful beetle near the garden edge and immediately trotted off to investigate.
Adrian walked over to Elena, who was standing by the fountain, the evening breeze playing softly with her hair.
"How did the meeting go?" Elena asked, searching his eyes.
"The war is over, Elena," Adrian said softly, reaching out to take both of her hands into his. "Permanently."
Elena looked into his eyes, seeing a profound, radiant peace that she had never seen before in a man who had carried the weight of the underworld on his shoulders.
"Adrian..." she began, her voice trembling slightly.
"Elena," Adrian interrupted gently, stepping closer until there was no distance left between them. "For three years, you built a system to survive alone. You locked your heart away because you thought nobody could protect you and Mia."
Tears glistened in Elena’s eyes as she listened, her heart beating frantically against her ribs.
"I spent twenty years building walls around myself because I thought power was the only thing that mattered," Adrian continued, his voice filled with deep, overwhelming emotion. "Mia broke those walls down with a plastic spoon. But you... you filled this empty house with love."
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box. He opened it to reveal a stunning, flawless yellow diamond ring that sparkled brilliantly in the golden sunset.
Elena gasped, her hands flying to her mouth as fresh tears spilled down her cheeks.
"Elena Maria Rossi," Adrian murmured, looking down at her with pure, unyielding devotion. "I don't want you to be my housekeeper. I want you to be my wife. I want to spend the rest of my life protecting you, loving you, and raising Mia as my own daughter. Will you marry me?"
Elena looked at the ring, then up into the eyes of the man who had turned his entire world upside down just to keep her child safe.
"Yes," Elena sobbed happily, throwing her arms around his neck. "Yes, Adrian! A thousand times yes!"
Adrian pulled her tightly into his arms, dipping her back slightly as he pressed his lips to hers in a deep, passionate kiss that sealed their futures together forever.
On the grass nearby, Mia stopped investigating her beetle, looked over at them, and put her hands on her tiny hips.

"Yuck!" Mia announced loudly. "Kissing!"
Adrian and Elena broke apart, laughing brightly under the open sky as Adrian reached down and scooped Mia up into his arms, pulling both mother and daughter against his chest.
