Chapter 5 - The Line in the Marble

The entire foyer fell into an absolute, suffocating silence.
Valenti froze. His revolver remained pointed at Adrian, but his eyes slowly dropped down to the three-year-old child standing beside his boot.
His eight enforcers stared in total bewildered shock.
Upstairs, Elena felt her vision go dark at the edges. She gripped the balcony railing, ready to throw herself over to cover her daughter.
In that fraction of a second, something terrifying happened to Adrian Moretti.
The calm, calculated composure that Adrian had maintained for twenty years instantly vaporized. His dark eyes turned into pure, unadulterated hellfire. Every muscle in his body coiled with a lethal, ancient rage that filled the entire room with an overwhelming pressure.
He didn't look at Valenti’s gun. He didn't look at the eight enforcers.
He looked at Valenti’s hand—which was three feet above Mia’s head.
"Salvatore," Adrian said.
The tone of his voice was not loud, but it carried an absolute, apocalyptic authority that made two of Valenti's men instinctively lower their weapons in terror.
"If your gun moves one millimeter lower," Adrian whispered, every word dripping with venom, "I will cut your heart out of your chest before you can take another breath."
Valenti, a seasoned mob veteran who had survived three decade-long gang wars, suddenly felt a wave of cold sweat break out across his neck. He looked at Adrian's eyes and realized, with absolute certainty, that Adrian was not bluffing.
Mia, entirely ignoring the life-and-death standoff, reached out and poked Valenti’s muddy boot with her shoe. "Clean it."
Adrian moved.
He didn't wait for Valenti to respond. In a flash of blinding, panther-like speed, Adrian bridged the ten-foot gap between the staircase and Valenti.
Before Valenti could pull his trigger, Adrian grabbed Valenti’s wrist, twisted it upward until the bone snapped with a sickening CRACK, and snatched the chrome revolver from his hand.
Valenti screamed in agony, falling to his knees on the marble floor.
Instantly, Vance and the Moretti guards flooded the foyer, tackling the eight disoriented enforcers to the ground, disarming them in seconds before they could even process their boss's downfall.
The foyer was secured in less than ten seconds.
Adrian didn't look at the disarmed men. He immediately dropped the revolver, crouched down, and scooped Mia up into his arms, pulling her small body tightly against his chest.
His heart was hammering against his ribs like a war drum—a sensation he hadn't felt in decades.
"Are you hurt?" Adrian asked, his voice shaking slightly as he checked her head, her arms, her hands. "Mia, look at me. Are you okay?"
Mia blinked, resting her head against Adrian’s shoulder, entirely unfazed by the violence that had just unfolded around her. "The big man broke his arm."
"He was clumsy," Adrian murmured, his hand gently cradling the back of her small head.
Elena sprinted down the service stairs, tears streaming down her face, and threw her arms around both of them, sobbing uncontrollably as she clutched her daughter.
"Mia! Oh God, Mia!" Elena cried, kissing her daughter’s cheeks over and over.

Adrian held both of them—the terrified mother and the fearless child—in the center of his grand foyer, ignoring the groaning men being dragged away by his guards.
For the first time in twenty years, Don Adrian Moretti realized there was something in this world he was willing to burn down his entire empire to protect.
