Chapter 2 - The Shadow in the Hallway

The next morning at 7:00 AM, Elena Rossi arrived at the gatehouse of the Moretti estate in her battered beige sedan. Her knuckles were white on the steering wheel as the heavy iron gates slid open without the usual ten-minute security check.

Beside her in the booster seat, Mia was clutching her stuffed rabbit, humming a nonsense song about yellow boots.

"Mia," Elena murmured softly, pulling into the private service driveway behind the main mansion. "Remember what we talked about in the car?"

"Don't touch the shiny glass," Mia recited happily. "Don't feed the grumpy man unless he asks."

"Mia!" Elena gasped, turning off the ignition. "I told you—no calling him that!"

"He likes it," Mia declared with absolute three-year-old certainty, unbuckling her seatbelt with a plastic click.

Elena sighed, rubbing her temples. She was exhausted. After returning from work the previous evening, she had spent three hours reviewing her meager bank statements. Between rent, medical insurance, and Mia’s preschool fees, she had less than four hundred dollars in savings. She couldn't afford to lose this job. She couldn't afford to make a single mistake.

When Elena stepped through the rear staff entrance carrying Mia, she was met not by the head housekeeper, Mrs. Gable, but by Vance himself.

Elena instantly stiffened, pulling Mia closer to her side. Everyone on the domestic staff knew Vance. He was the Don's right hand—a man who moved like a phantom and whose glare could freeze hot water.

"Mrs. Rossi," Vance said, his voice deep and raspy.

"Mr. Vance," Elena stammered, her voice shaking slightly. "I... I brought Mia again as Mr. Moretti instructed. But I promise she will stay strictly inside the staff alcove. I bought a portable playpen—"

"The playpen won't be necessary," Vance interrupted, holding out a small gold-trimmed electronic pass card on a blue lanyard.

Elena stared at it. "What is this?"

"A level-one estate pass," Vance explained smoothly. "It grants your daughter access to the ground-floor library, the conservatory, and the east gardens. Mr. Moretti ordered the grounds cleared for her safety."

Elena felt as if the floor beneath her feet had tilted. "Mr. Vance... I am a housekeeper. I dust the crystal and clean the guest suites. Why is Mr. Moretti doing this?"

Vance’s scarred face softened by a fraction of a millimeter—a rare, almost historical event. "Because, Mrs. Rossi, in twenty years, I have seen men offer Don Moretti ten million dollars in cash just to negotiate five minutes of his time. Yesterday, your daughter made him eat oatmeal and dismissed a room full of syndicate bosses. You underestimate the power she holds."

Before Elena could process his words, Mia reached out, took the gold pass card from Vance’s hand, and slipped it around her own neck like a giant medal.

"Thank you, scary mister," Mia chirped.

Elena nearly passed out on the spot. "Mia! Apologize right now!"

Vance actually let out a dry, quiet chuckle—a sound so foreign to the hallway that two passing maids stopped in absolute shock. "She's fine, Mrs. Rossi. Go start your rounds. The Don is in his private glass conservatory."
