Chapter 6 - The Unspoken Vow

By midnight, the estate had been completely restored to order.
Valenti and his men had been handed over to federal authorities along with a mountain of evidence regarding their illegal gambling and extortion rings, effectively wiping the Valenti syndicate off the map forever without Adrian needing to fire a single shot.
Upstairs in the master guest suite, Mia was sound asleep in a large canopy bed, clutching her stuffed rabbit.
Elena sat on the edge of the bed, her shoulders trembling slightly as she stared out the window at the dying storm.
A quiet knock sounded at the open door.
Adrian walked in, carrying a tray with two cups of warm tea. He had changed into a soft black wool sweater, his sleeves rolled up, looking less like a ruthless syndicate leader and more like a man burdened by the immense responsibility of his choices.
He set the tray on the nightstand and offered a cup to Elena.
"Drink this," Adrian said gently. "It will help with the shock."
Elena took the cup with trembling hands. "Thank you."
Adrian sat in the leather armchair beside the bed, watching Mia sleep. "She’s incredible, Elena. She didn't cry once."
"She doesn't know how dangerous the world is," Elena whispered, her voice cracking. "I tried so hard to build a safe life for her after Daniel died. A quiet life. And tonight..." She looked at Adrian, fresh tears welling in her eyes. "Tonight I realized how close I came to losing her because I brought her into your world."
Adrian felt a sharp, agonizing stab of guilt in his chest. He reached out, his large, warm hand covering Elena’s shaking fingers on the tea mug.
"You didn't bring her into a dangerous world, Elena," Adrian said softly, his voice rich with intense conviction. "You brought her into my home. And I give you my sacred word—as long as there is breath in my body, no harm will ever come to you or Mia again."
Elena looked down at his hand covering hers. His grip was strong, protective, and filled with a deep, unspoken promise.
"Why are you doing this for us, Adrian?" Elena asked, looking up into his dark eyes. "We are just a housekeeper and her child. You have an empire to run."
Adrian took a slow breath, his dark eyes searching her face.
"For twenty years, Elena, I thought my empire was everything," Adrian confessed, his voice dropping into a tender, vulnerable whisper. "I thought money, power, and fear were the only things that kept me alive. But when Mia walked into my study with that spoon... she showed me that I was already dead inside."
He tightened his grip on her hand softly.

"You and Mia didn't enter my world, Elena," Adrian murmured. "You brought life back into mine."
Elena stared at him, her heart fluttering violently in her chest. The fear that had consumed her all evening melted away, replaced by a warm, blooming sensation that made her breath hitch in her throat.
