Chapter 22 - Shadows of Regret

Miles away from the glittering lights of the convention center, inside the austere concrete walls of Cumberland Federal Correctional Institution, the atmosphere was thick with quiet despair.

In the recreation yard, isolated from the general population, a pale and weathered inmate watched a small portable television mounted high on the cafeteria wall. The news broadcast was replaying the dramatic climax of the Baltimore healthcare symposium, broadcasting Mara Sterling’s radiant face across the screen as she stood hand-in-hand with her husband Julian and their son Eli.

Grant Whitmore stared at the screen, his chest aching with a dull, familiar pain. His health had deteriorated rapidly since his conversation with Mara months ago, but the physical sickness was nothing compared to the crushing weight of his own legacy. Whitmore Health, the crown jewel he had sacrificed his family, his integrity, and his soul to build, had officially been rebranded under public state management, erasing his name from the medical towers he had once ruled like a god.

Rachel Palmer was long gone, living under an assumed name in Florida while awaiting trial for her own role in the foundation embezzlement scheme. The fake world he had built to feed his ego had vanished into thin air, leaving behind only the cold reality of a prison cell and a shattered life.

A correctional guard tapped heavily on the steel mesh fence. "Back inside, Whitmore. Mail call."

Grant dragged his feet back to his block. On his narrow metal cot lay a single brown envelope—not from lawyers or federal prosecutors, but a routine legal notification regarding the final probate settlement of his late mother’s modest estate. Glancing over the paperwork, he realized there was nothing left for him. No inheritance, no safety net, no redemption arc waiting at the end of his sentence.

He sat down on the edge of the cot, buried his face in his trembling hands, and finally understood the true cost of selfishness: when you trade everything for an illusion, you end up with absolute nothingness.
