Chapter 9 - The Broken Crown

Victoria didn't drop a weapon. She didn't have one.

Instead, she lost her mind completely.

"YOU CAN'T TAKE THEM FROM ME!" Victoria screamed, lunging past her father, charging up the terrace steps toward Clara and the twins. "THEY ARE MY SONS! I RAISED THEM! I AM MRS. JULIAN STERLING!"

Before she could reach the top step, Clara stepped forward, shielding Leo behind her body.

With a movement born of four years of stolen motherhood and unbearable grief, Clara delivered a sharp, violent slap across Victoria’s face.

SNAP!

The force of the hit sent Victoria tumbling backward down the stone steps, crashing heavily onto the gravel terrace at her father’s feet. Her lip was split, her hair ruined, her manicured nails broken against the stone.

"You are nothing," Clara said, her voice ringing clear and strong across the courtyard. "You were never their mother. You were just the monster who kept them in the dark."

Leo, standing behind Clara, took a small step forward. He looked down at Victoria lying in the dirt, then raised his tiny face to look up at Clara.

"Mommy," Leo said.

It wasn't a whisper this time. It was a clear, confident, beautiful word that echoed off the stone walls of the estate.

Noah, still in Maya’s arms, reached out his small hands toward Clara, tears of joy streaming down his cheeks. "Mommy... home."

Clara fell to her knees on the steps, pulling both of her sons into her arms, burying her face in their soft hair, weeping tears of pure, unadulterated healing.

Julian stepped up beside them, dropping to one knee, wrapping his powerful arms around all three of them—his real family, finally reunited, restored from the ashes of a four-year nightmare.

Federal law enforcement vehicles pulled into the courtyard, sirens wailing, red and blue lights flashing across the marble fountain. Agents poured out, handcuffing Senator Montgomery and dragging a kicking, screaming Victoria into the back of a black van.

Julian didn't look back at them. He kept his eyes locked on Clara and his sons.
