Chapter 5 - The Confession in Suite 402

The private wing of St. Jude’s Hospital was quiet, illuminated only by dim floor lights and the quiet hum of medical monitors.

At 4:15 AM, Dr. Arthur Vance was sitting in his corner office on the fourth floor, reviewing patient files. At sixty-two, he was a respected surgeon with a silver hair, expensive gold cufflinks, and a reputation for discreetly handling the medical needs of Manhattan’s elite.

The office door clicked open.

Dr. Vance looked up, smiling politely. "Can I help—"

The smile vanished instantly as Marcus stepped into the room, locking the door behind him and pulling the blinds shut over the glass panels. Julian walked in right behind him, followed by Maya.

"Julian," Dr. Vance stammered, standing up so fast his leather chair rolled back into the bookshelf. "What... what a surprising visit. Is something wrong with the boys?"

Julian didn't answer. He walked slowly across the plush Persian rug, pulled out a chair across from the doctor, and sat down. He placed a small portable speaker on the desk.

He hit play.

Clara’s weak, rasping voice filled the sterile office air: "...Victoria took them... they're breathing... Dr. Vance, please... don't let her..."

Dr. Vance’s face drained of color until he looked like a corpse. His hands began to shake violently, knocking a silver pen off the blotter.

"That... that’s a fake recording," Vance stammered, his voice rising in pitch. "I don't know where you got that, Julian, but—"

Marcus stepped forward, grabbing the doctor by his silk tie and slamming him back into his leather chair with enough force to make the wood crack.

"Listen to me very carefully, Arthur," Julian said, leaning across the desk, his hazel eyes burning with absolute homicide. "Four years ago, you took three million dollars from the Montgomery family to falsify a birth record and declare Clara Vance dead. You handed my sons to Victoria. And you told me my first love was burned in a private crematory."

"It was Senator Montgomery!" Vance whimpered, tears pouring down his wrinkled cheeks. "He threatened my license! He threatened my family! He said if I didn't perform the procedure—"

"What procedure?" Maya screamed, stepping up to the desk, her face contorted in grief. "What did you do to my sister?!"

Dr. Vance looked at Maya, his eyes wide with recognition and terror. "Maya... oh God... you look just like her..."

"WHAT PROCEDURE, ARTHUR?!" Julian roared, slamming his fist onto the glass desk, shattering the top corner.

"She... she didn't die during the C-section!" Vance sobbed out, covering his face with his blood-stained sleeve. "She was alive! The uterine rupture was manageable! But Senator Montgomery brought in a private surgical team. They... they injected her with a paralytic agent to simulate brain death, declared her deceased, and transferred her to a private long-term care facility in upstate New York!"

The office went deathly quiet.

Julian felt his heart stop in his chest. Maya gasped, clutching her throat, stumbling backward until Marcus caught her arm.

"She’s... alive?" Julian whispered, the words tasting like ash and lightning in his mouth. "Clara is alive?"

"She was four years ago!" Vance wept. "I don't know if she’s still breathing! The facility is called Oakridge Manor! It’s a private asylum owned by Montgomery’s holding company! I swear to God, that’s all I know! Please don't kill me!"

Julian stood up slowly. He looked at Marcus.

"Call the Federal Bureau of Investigation," Julian ordered, his voice cold as a winter tomb. "Hand them Dr. Vance and this recording. Tell them the Sterling family is filing charges for kidnapping, medical treason, and attempted murder."

"And where are you going, Boss?" Marcus asked.

May you like

Julian looked at Maya, his eyes burning with a dark, terrifying determination.

"We’re going to get her back," Julian said. "And then I’m going to end Victoria."
