Chapter 7 - The Tears of the Dead

Julian fell to his knees beside the bed.

He didn't care about the dirt on his thousand-dollar suit. He didn't care about the security sirens screaming in the distance. He grabbed Clara’s thin, pale hands and pressed them against his face, his body shaking with violent, uncontrollable sobs.

"Clara..." he wept, kissing her knuckles, her palms, her forehead. "Oh God, Clara... forgive me... forgive me..."

Clara’s thin fingers reached out, touching his hair, feeling his tears on her skin. A faint, sad smile touched her pale lips.

"You took so long, my love," she whispered softly, her voice trembling. "I sang every night... I thought... I thought you forgot the song."

Maya rushed to the other side of the bed, dropping to her knees and wrapping her arms tightly around her sister's waist. "Clara! It's me! It's Maya!"

Clara pulled back slightly, her eyes widening as she looked at her younger sister. "Maya? Little bird... you grew up so fast..."

"They told us you were dead!" Maya sobbed into Clara’s shoulder. "They lied to us for four years!"

Clara’s expression darkened, a shadow of profound motherly agony passing over her face. She gripped Julian’s hands tightly.

"My babies, Julian," Clara gasped, her breathing turning shallow as terror filled her eyes. "The woman... the blonde woman with the cold eyes... she took them from the delivery room! She said they were dead! Are they—"

"They are alive, Clara," Julian interrupted, looking up into her eyes with absolute, unyielding devotion. "They are four years old. Their names are Leo and Noah."

Clara let out a shattered, gasping breath, covering her mouth as fresh tears spilled over her cheeks. "Leo... Noah... my little boys..."

"They're safe," Julian promised. "They're at the penthouse. And they know your song, Clara. Leo spoke his first real words today because he heard Maya humming it."

Clara closed her eyes, weeping softly against Julian’s shoulder, holding him as if he were the only solid thing in a world of ghosts.

Marcus stepped into the doorway, his face grim. "Boss. We have a problem."

Julian stood up, keeping one hand locked in Clara’s. "What is it?"

"Senator Montgomery’s private security detail just entered the main gate," Marcus reported, checking his tactical radio. "And Victoria isn't at the penthouse anymore. She bribed her way out twenty minutes ago. She’s on her way here."

Julian’s face hardened into a mask of pure, absolute vengeance. He looked down at Clara, brushing a lock of hair from her cheek.

"Can you walk, my love?" he asked gently.

May you like

Clara looked at him, her hazel eyes kindling with a fierce, motherly fire that four years of captivity had failed to extinguish.

"I can walk," Clara said quietly. "Take me to my sons."
