Chapter 4 - The Shadow at the Gate
For two weeks, the stone estate transformed.
With Paige living in the guest suite, the dark, quiet house filled with light and laughter. Paige cooked traditional Sicilian meals alongside the kitchen staff, taught Leo how to paint, and sang to him every evening before bed.
And every evening, Landon found himself leaving his private office early just to sit in the nursery doorway, watching Paige interact with his nephew.
The cold, ruthless mafia boss found his frozen heart thawing day by day. He found himself looking forward to breakfast, listening to Paige’s quick wit and gentle voice. In a world defined by violence, loyalty tests, and bloodshed, Paige was a breath of pure, untainted life.
One evening, after Leo fell asleep, Paige walked out onto the stone balcony overlooking the moonlit gardens.
Landon walked out behind her, draping a warm cashmere coat over her shoulders.
"You should be resting," Landon said gently.
"I can't sleep," Paige replied, looking up at the stars. "It feels like a dream, Landon. For three years, I was terrified of every shadow, every siren in the street. Now... I feel safe."
Landon turned her gently to face him. The space between them grew small, charged with a magnetic, undeniable tension that had been building for weeks.
"You are safe, Paige," Landon whispered, his dark eyes scanning her face with profound tenderness. "I swear on my family's name, as long as I draw breath, no one will ever make you run again."
He leaned down, his lips meeting hers in a deep, passionate kiss that tasted like rain and fire. Paige wrapped her arms around his neck, sinking into the strength and safety of the man the whole city feared.
Before the moment could last, a sharp alarm shattered the quiet night air.

Dominic burst through the balcony doors, his sidearm drawn, his expression grim. "Boss! We’ve got a breach at the south gate. It's the Camorra—they tracked Paige's old passport signal when she tried to check her bank account last week!"
