Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary of Stone

The Moretti estate in Long Island was an impenetrable fortress of gray stone, iron gates, and high security cameras.
Paige was brought into the grand library on the second floor. A warm fire crackled in the stone fireplace, throwing golden light across floor-to-ceiling bookshelves and heavy leather armchairs.
A soft knock sounded at the door, and little Leo peeked his head inside, clutching his wooden boat.
"Lullaby lady?" Leo whispered softly.
Paige’s heart melted. The cold fear she had carried for three years softened as she looked at the innocent, grieving child. She knelt down on the rug, opening her arms. Leo ran straight into her embrace, wrapping his tiny arms around her neck.
Landon stood near the doorway, watching the scene in absolute silence.
"He hasn't hugged anyone since his father died six months ago," Landon said, his voice dropping its harsh, authoritative edge for the first time.
Paige gently patted Leo’s back, looking up at the dangerous mafia leader. "He's lonely, Landon. He's surrounded by guards and stone walls, but he doesn't have a mother or a father."
Landon walked over to the fireplace, leaning his arm against the mantelpiece.
"Six months ago, a rogue faction of the Camorra tried to take over my brother's territory," Landon explained, staring into the flames. "They killed Marco. I brought Leo here to protect him, but I am a soldier, Paige, not a father. I don't know how to fix a broken child."
"You don't fix him with guards and high walls," Paige said softly, standing up while holding Leo’s hand. "You fix him with love and safety."
Landon looked at Paige, taking in her dark eyes, her fierce protection of his nephew, and the quiet dignity she held despite being held in his house.
"I know why you're hiding, Paige," Landon said. "The Camorra is searching the East Coast for the remaining Falcone heirs to consolidate their claim on Palermo. If they find you, they will force you into a political marriage—or worse."
Paige swallowed hard. "Then let me go. Let me take a bus to Canada."
"No," Landon said firmly, stepping toward her. "Canada won't keep you safe. I will."
"Why would you risk a war with the Camorra for a stranger?" Paige asked, searching his eyes.

Landon reached out, his long fingers gently brushing a dark strand of hair behind her ear.
"Because the stranger knew my brother's song," Landon whispered. "And because my nephew smiled today for the first time in six months. You stay here. Under my roof. Under my protection."
