Chapter 9 - Dawn at Blackwood Manor

The first rays of golden autumn sunlight broke over the cliffs of Blackwood Manor, painting the crashing waves of the Long Island Sound in brilliant shades of amber and rose.
Inside the grand conservatory, the atmosphere was peaceful, warm, and filled with life.
Little Penny sat on the plush rug by the French doors, laughing softly as she tossed a rubber ball across the room. Titan bolted after it with clumsy, joyful enthusiasm, sliding across the Persian rug before bringing the ball back and dropping it gently in front of the little girl's lap.
Penny patted the massive mastiff's wrinkled head, a bright, beautiful smile lighting up her face.
Willa sat nearby on the velvet sofa, sipping a cup of hot chamomile tea that Mrs. Higgins had prepared. She wore her own clothes now—no disguises, no dye in her hair, no fake glasses. Her natural chestnut curls fell softly around her shoulders, framing a face no longer haunted by fear, but radiant with hard-won peace.
Footsteps approached behind her.
Kendrick walked into the conservatory, carrying a tray with two fresh cups of coffee. He wore a soft cashmere sweater instead of his usual tailored suit, looking relaxed for the first time since she had met him.
He handed a cup to Willa, then sat down on the sofa beside her.
"The federal task force has officially dismantled Barrett's entire overseas network," Kendrick said quietly, taking a sip of his coffee. "The Ashford Syndicate is clean. Every corrupt asset has been purged."
"And my father's name?" Willa asked, turning her head to look at him.
"Fully exonerated in the federal archives," Kendrick replied, his dark eyes softening. "A memorial foundation in his honor has been established for corporate whistleblowers. No one will ever forget what Arthur Hayes tried to do."
Willa felt a warm tear slip down her cheek, but this time, it was a tear of profound, unburdened relief. She leaned her head against Kendrick’s shoulder, inhaling the familiar scent of cedar and espresso.
"So," Willa murmured softly, a playful smile touching her lips. "What happens to the plus-size waitress now?"
Kendrick chuckled, a rich, genuine sound that echoed warmly through the sunlit room. He reached over, wrapping his arm around her waist and pulling her closer, while his thumb gently brushed against the heavy gold signet ring still resting on her finger.
"I believe," Kendrick whispered, pressing a soft kiss to the top of her head, "you have a permanent position managing the most important household in Boston. That is, if you're willing to accept the boss—and his dog."
Across the room, Titan let out a happy, booming bark, as if seconding the motion, while Penny looked over and giggled.

Willa looked into Kendrick’s eyes, finding no shadows left—only a future waiting to be written.
"I think," Willa smiled, leaning in to kiss him, "I can finally get used to the view."
