Chapter 7 - The Alliance

The atmosphere in the study shifted from a confrontation to a war room.

Willa wiped the remaining tears from her face, her grief hardening back into the fierce, calculating resolve that had kept her alive for six years.

"If Barrett finds out I'm Arthur Hayes's daughter, he'll kill me before the night is over," Willa said, her voice steady now.

"Barrett won't touch you," Kendrick replied coldly, walking over to a wall safe behind a heavy oil painting and spinning the dial. "Because as of tonight, you are no longer just a guest or a waitress."

He pulled a heavy, velvet-lined mahogany box from the safe and opened it. Inside rested a thick gold signet ring bearing the crest of the Ashford Syndicate—a coiled viper surrounding a crimson rose.

"What is that?" Willa asked, eyeing the ring warily.

"Protection," Kendrick said, picking up the ring. "And power. In our world, an outsider is a target. But someone under the direct, personal protection of the syndicate boss—wearing the Ashford crest—is untouchable. Cross them, and you cross the entire family."

He held out the ring. Willa looked from the heavy gold band up to Kendrick’s unwavering dark eyes.

"Why go this far for me, Kendrick?" she asked, her voice quiet. "You're the most feared man on the East Coast. You don't need a partner. You certainly don't need me."

"When my wife died five years ago, and Penny stopped speaking, something inside this house died with them," Kendrick said, his voice dropping into a rare, vulnerable cadence. "For years, I've ruled an empire of ash and blood because I had nothing left to protect. But the moment Titan walked across that ballroom floor and sat at your feet... my daughter smiled for the first time in three thousand days."

He stepped closer, taking her hand and sliding the heavy gold signet ring onto her right index finger. It was slightly too large, but it fit with a comforting, weighty presence.

"You brought my daughter back to life, Willa," Kendrick whispered, his thumb brushing lightly against her knuckles. "And now, we are going to burn Barrett's empire to the ground together."

Just then, a sharp knock echoed at the study door.

Mrs. Higgins hurried inside, her face pale and urgent.

"Mr. Ashford," the housekeeper gasped. "We just intercepted an encrypted transmission leaving the east wing. Barrett’s private security detail is mobilizing. They're moving the offshore account servers out of the New York harbor warehouse tonight. If those servers leave the country, the financial proof of Barrett's treason vanishes forever."

Kendrick’s expression turned to ice. "He’s making his move."

"And he knows we're onto him," Willa added sharply, her tactical mind clicking into gear. "He must have seen you bring me into the study. He's destroying the evidence and cutting his losses."

Kendrick turned to his desk, grabbing his tactical radio and firing off crisp, commanding orders. "Marcus, mobilize the inner guard. Lock down the perimeter gates. No one leaves Blackwood Manor."

He turned back to Willa, his dark eyes burning with deadly intent.

"Are you ready to finish what your father started, Willa Hayes?"

May you like

Willa clenched her fist, the heavy gold Ashford ring catching the amber light of the study.

"Let's go hunting."
