Chapter 6 - The Confession

Willa stepped back as if she had been physically struck. Her breath came in short, ragged gasps.
"Liar!" she hissed, tears of fury stinging the backs of her eyes. "Your organization destroyed my family! You took everything from me! And now you expect me to believe you were his protector?"
"Look at the ledger, Willa," Kendrick said, turning to his desk and tapping a key on his secure computer terminal. A digital file popped up on the screen, locked behind military-grade encryption.
He punched in a sequence, and a scanned document appeared—a signed wire-transfer authorization from six years ago, bearing Arthur Hayes's signature, alongside a secondary document marked Confidential Internal Audit.
Willa stepped closer, her eyes scanning the lines of text.
"Six years ago, Barrett and our former underboss were using Hayes Logistics to funnel cartel money through shell corporations without my knowledge," Kendrick explained, his voice low and steady. "When your father discovered it, he came directly to me. Not to the police—to me. Because he knew the police were on our payroll."
Willa stared at the screen, her knees suddenly feeling weak.
"Your father and I worked out a deal," Kendrick continued, stepping closer to her. "He was going to turn over the hard evidence to federal prosecutors under witness protection, and I was going to cleanse the syndicate from the inside by cutting out Barrett's network. But someone leaked our meeting."
"Who?" Willa breathed, the horrific puzzle pieces finally snapping together in her mind.
"Barrett," Kendrick said grimly. "He intercepted your father's car before he could reach the safe house. I arrived ten minutes too late. The car was already burning at the bottom of the ravine."
Willa covered her mouth with her trembling hand. A sob broke past her lips, six years of constructed hatred and grief crashing down on her like a tidal wave. She had spent half her life blaming Kendrick for everything, hating him with every fiber of her being—only to learn that he had been her father's secret ally.
Kendrick reached out, his hand gently resting on her shoulder. The touch was surprisingly tender, grounding her against the swirling vortex of shock and pain.
"I've spent six years looking for the missing financial ledgers your father hid before he died, Willa," Kendrick said softly. "The evidence that will finally allow me to legally strip Barrett of his power and cast him out of the syndicate for good."
Willa looked up, wiping a stray tear from her cheek with the back of her hand. "Why are you telling me this?"
"Because," Kendrick said, his dark eyes locking onto hers with absolute intensity, "the day you dropped that tray at Belladonna... you weren't hiding from random customers. You were watching Barrett. You've been inside our network for months, haven't you?"
Willa swallowed hard, her secret exposed. "I got a job at Belladonna because I knew Barrett dined there every Tuesday night. I was trying to find a way to get close to his ledger books."

A slow, grim smile touched the corner of Kendrick's mouth.
"Then it seems," Kendrick murmured, "we are hunting the same monster."
