Chapter 8 - Night of Reckoning

The rain lashed against the reinforced windshield of the black armored SUV as it tore down the coastal highway toward the South Boston shipping docks.

Inside the vehicle, the air was thick with the smell of gun oil and cold tension. Kendrick sat in the passenger seat, checking the magazine of his Sig Sauer pistol with rhythmic precision, while Marcus—his head of security—drove at breakneck speed through the stormy night.

In the back seat sat Willa, dressed in dark tactical gear that Mrs. Higgins had somehow procured from the estate's subterranean armory. Her hair was pulled back into a tight braid, and a compact Glock 19 rested securely in her holster. She wasn't just a waitress anymore; she was a combatant taking back her family's honor.

"The main warehouse is surrounded," Marcus reported, tapping the tactical map displayed on the dashboard screen. "Barrett has at least twenty armed mercenaries guarding the server trucks. If we storm the front, they’ll torch the hard drives before we reach the office."

"We aren't storming the front," Kendrick said, his voice cold and analytical. He turned his head, looking back at Willa. "There’s a secondary intake pipe running from the sea directly beneath the main server room. It’s narrow, wet, and guarded by only two men."

Willa nodded without hesitation. "I can get through it. My father used to bring me down to these docks when I was a kid. I know every maintenance shaft in this facility."

Kendrick’s jaw tightened. A flash of hesitation crossed his features—the first time she had ever seen him look vulnerable. "It's dangerous, Willa. If Barrett's men catch you down there—"

"They won't catch me," Willa interrupted, her voice hard as steel. "This is for my father. And for every year I spent hiding in the shadows."

Kendrick studied her face for a long moment, then gave a sharp, decisive nod. "Marcus, take the diversion team through the front gates. Create as much noise as humanly possible. I’m going in through the maintenance shaft with Willa."

Ten minutes later, the rain-slicked docks of South Boston erupted into chaos.

Explosions echoed across the harbor as Marcus's team breached the front security gate with a thunderous flash-bang. Automatic gunfire rattled against corrugated steel containers, drawing every single mercenary toward the front entrance.

In the shadows of the lower pier, hidden by the deafening roar of the crashing sea and pouring rain, Kendrick and Willa slipped through the rusted iron grate of the maintenance intake pipe.

The water inside was freezing, sloshing up to their shins as they crouched and moved stealthily through the narrow concrete tunnel.

"Left fork coming up," Willa whispered, leading the way with absolute confidence in the dark. "It leads directly up into the sub-floor of Barrett's private office."

They climbed the rusted iron ladder at the end of the tunnel, pushing open a heavy floor-ventilation grate that led straight into the glowing, server-lined office above.

No one was inside—except for Barrett himself.

The senior advisor stood by his mahogany desk, frantically pulling hard drives out of the master server rack and tossing them into a large duffel bag, cursing under his breath as sirens wailed outside.

Willa pushed the vent grate open with a soft clatter and dropped silently onto the floor behind him, her Glock raised and leveled at the center of his back.

Kendrick followed silently behind her, stepping out of the shadows like an avenging angel.

"Looking for something, Barrett?" Kendrick’s cold, smooth voice cut through the hum of the cooling fans.

Barrett froze. The duffel bag slipped from his fingers, spilling a dozen hard drives across the polished floor. Slowly, agonizingly, he turned around, his face twisted in sheer terror as he saw Kendrick—and the young woman standing beside him.

"You..." Barrett gasped, his eyes darting to Willa. "You're Arthur Hayes's daughter. You were the waitress..."

"I'm the person who is going to watch you lose everything," Willa said, stepping closer, her finger steady on the trigger.

Barrett’s hand twitched toward the concealed holster beneath his suit jacket. "You think you can—"

Bang.

Kendrick’s pistol barked once, the bullet clipping the edge of Barrett’s desk and shattering a ceramic coffee mug into a thousand pieces, stopping the advisor's hand dead in its tracks.

"Don't even think about it, Barrett," Kendrick warned, stepping forward until he loomed directly over the trembling traitor. "Your network is compromised. Your offshore accounts have been frozen by federal prosecutors using the backup files Willa helped me decrypt this afternoon. You're finished."

Barrett’s knees buckled. All the arrogant bluster, all the polished cruelty vanished, leaving behind a desperate, pathetic coward. He fell to his knees on the concrete floor, looking up at Willa with pleading eyes.

"Please... spare me," Barrett begged, holding up his hands. "I can give you names. I can give you the European contacts—"

"My father didn't get to beg for his life when you cut his brakes," Willa said, her voice chillingly calm. She lowered her weapon just an inch, looking down at the man who had ruined her family.

She didn't need to pull the trigger. Justice, raw and absolute, was already claiming him.

Heavy boots echoed down the hallway as Marcus and the inner guard burst into the office, subduing Barrett with heavy zip-ties and hauling him roughly to his feet.

"Take him to the federal drop site," Kendrick ordered without looking back. "Let the authorities handle the rest of his sentence."

As Barrett was dragged away, screaming curses into the rain, the room fell silent again, save for the hum of the servers and the steady patter of the storm outside.

May you like

Willa let out a long, shuddering breath. The heavy gold ring on her finger felt warm against her skin.

The ghost of her father could finally rest.
