Chapter 9 - A New Beginning

Three months later.

The coastline of Rhode Island was quiet, marked by green rolling cliffs, high stone bluffs, and the rhythmic sound of crashing ocean waves.

Standing on a private cliff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean was a beautiful two-story stone house with a wraparound porch and large floor-to-ceiling glass windows.

There were no iron gates. There were no armed guards standing at the perimeter. There were no surveillance cameras hidden in the wainscoting.

Just the clean salt breeze and the cry of seagulls overhead.

On the wooden porch, Adrian sat in a comfortable armchair, dressed in a simple white linen shirt and dark trousers. He was reading a book, a small pair of reading glasses resting on the bridge of his nose.

The front door opened, and Lily came running out onto the porch, wearing her favorite yellow dress, her small canvas shoes squeaking against the cedar deck.

"Daddy! Look!" Lily shouted excitedly, holding up a sea shell she had found on the beach earlier that morning.

Adrian set his book down on the small table, took off his glasses, and picked his daughter up into his arms, tossing her gently into the air while she giggled with pure joy.

"That's a very rare shell, sweetheart," Adrian said, sitting her on his lap. "Where did you find it?"

"Mommy showed me!" Lily said, pointing toward the garden path leading down to the shore.

Elena walked up the wooden steps, wearing a sun hat and a light cotton dress. She carried a basket of fresh flowers she had picked from the garden.

She walked over to the armchair, bending down to kiss Adrian softly on the lips before turning to smooth Lily's dark curls.

"Claire called from Vermont this morning," Elena said, sitting on the porch railing beside them. "She said her new house is wonderful. She sent a box of fresh maple syrup for Lily."

"Can we go visit her?" Lily asked, looking up at Adrian with her big brown eyes.

"Of course we can," Adrian smiled, kissing the top of her head. "We'll drive up next weekend."

Dante’s black sedan pulled up the long gravel driveway, stopping near the side garage. Dante stepped out, wearing a simple blue suit without a holster in sight. He walked up the porch steps carrying a thick leather folder.

"Boss," Dante said, nodding respectfully to Elena and Adrian.

"I told you not to call me 'Boss' anymore, Dante," Adrian said with a light chuckle.

"Force of habit," Dante said, smiling faintly. He set the leather folder on the small table beside Adrian’s book. "The legal transfers are complete. The last of the Vance estate assets have been liquidated and transferred to the children's hospital fund. The Commission has officially accepted your retirement."

Adrian looked at the folder, then reached out and pushed it aside without opening it.

"Thank you, Dante," Adrian said softly. "For everything."

Dante looked at the happy family sitting on the sunlit porch, then looked out over the blue ocean waves. "It suits you, Adrian. The quiet."

"It took me a long time to find it," Adrian replied.
