Chapter 5 - The Legacy of Lies

An hour later, the private medical suite on the third floor of the mansion was quiet.

Dante and the surviving security team were downstairs securing the gates and clearing the destruction in the foyer.

Claire sat on a sofa in the corner, holding a cup of hot tea, her eyes fixed on Lily, who had fallen asleep on a plush armchair wrapped in a dry fleece blanket.

Adrian stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, looking out over the rain-slicked gardens. Elena sat on the edge of an examination table while a private doctor finished wrapping a bandage around her arm where a bullet had grazed her skin.

"The wound is clean, Mrs. Kessler," the doctor said quietly, packing his kit. "No stitches required, but you need rest."

"Thank you, Doctor," Elena said.

When the doctor left the room, closing the door behind him, the tension returned like a physical weight.

Adrian turned around, his arms crossed over his chest. "How did Marcus track Claire here?"

"He didn't track Claire," Elena said softly, looking at the sleeping child. "He tracked me. I broke out of the facility three days ago. I knew Marcus was monitoring all syndicate channels, so I deliberately used an old encrypted frequency to contact Claire. I knew he would trace the signal to New York."

"You used my home as bait?" Adrian asked, his voice sharp.

"I used your home as a fortress!" Elena shot back, her eyes blazing. "I knew Marcus was preparing to launch a final assault on your territory this weekend. He has three foreign mercenary groups backing him. If I hadn't brought the fight to your front door tonight, his men would have ambushed you at the docks tomorrow morning!"

Claire spoke up from the corner, her voice trembling. "Mr. Kessler... Elena is telling the truth. When Marcus’s men raided the facility eighteen months ago, I saw the operational folders. Marcus wasn't just trying to protect the Vance legacy. He was trying to erase both of your bloodlines so he could sell the entire New York transport network to a syndicate in Chicago."

Adrian walked over to the armchair where Lily was sleeping. He looked down at her tiny, peaceful face—the soft curve of her nose, the long eyelashes that matched his mother's.

"She called me sad," Adrian whispered, a rare, genuine softness touching his features for a brief second. "She walked right up to me in front of four armed men and told me I should be her daddy."

Elena smiled weakly, her eyes glistening with tears. "She has your eyes, Adrian. And your arrogance."

"What happens now?" Claire asked, looking between the two of them. "Marcus knows Lily is here. He knows Elena is alive. He won't stop until he finishes this."

Adrian bent down, gently tucked the edge of the fleece blanket around his daughter’s shoulders, and stood up straight.

"He won't get another chance," Adrian said, his voice dropping into a cold, lethal register that made even Claire shudder. "Marcus built his entire empire on the belief that I was weakened by grief. He thought losing Elena made me vulnerable."

He looked at Elena, his dark eyes fixing onto hers with an unbreakable intensity.

"Tonight, we give him what he wants," Adrian said.

Elena frowned slightly. "What do you mean?"

"He wants a war for New York," Adrian replied, pulling a dark leather notebook from his coat pocket—the master ledger of Marcus Vance's syndicate operations that Dante had recovered from one of the dead mercenaries in the foyer. "So we give him one. But we don't fight it in the streets. We fight it at the annual Commission Summit tomorrow night."

Elena gasped. "The Summit? All seven family bosses will be there. You'll be walking into a room full of men who answered to my father for twenty years!"

"No," Adrian said, a dark, terrifying smile touching the corners of his lips. "I'll be walking into a room full of men who are tired of Marcus Vance’s lies. And I'll be bringing his dead daughter as my chief witness."
