Chapter 4 - The Shadow in the Mirror

The intruder moved like a phantom through the dust, landing three quick shots into the guards covering Marcus.

Marcus gasped in shock, retreating toward the blown-out main entrance as his rear escort returned fire. "You!" Marcus roared toward the masked woman. "You were supposed to be locked in the facility!"

The woman didn't answer with words. She rolled across the marble floor, picked up a discarded submachine gun from a fallen mercenary, and laid down a wall of suppression fire that forced Marcus and his remaining men to scramble back into their armored SUVs.

Outside, tires screeched against the gravel as Marcus’s convoy pulled away in a desperate retreat, leaving six of their men dead on the foyer floor.

Silence returned to the mansion, broken only by the crackle of burning velvet drapery and the steady hiss of the fire sprinklers starting up overhead.

Adrian stood at the top of the stairs, his gun raised, pointing directly at the masked woman standing in the center of the flooded foyer.

Dante scrambled down the left staircase, his weapon trained on her back. "Don't move! Hands where I can see them!"

The woman stood still amid the dripping water and floating ash. Slowly, she lowered her weapons to her sides and let them drop onto the wet marble floor with a heavy splash.

She reached up with trembling fingers to undo the strap of her leather mask.

When the mask fell away, the breath left Adrian’s lungs.

Her dark hair was cut short, framed around a face that bore a thin, faint scar along her jawline. Her skin was paler than he remembered, her eyes darker, hardened by three years of hiding in the shadows.

Elena.

"Adrian," she whispered, her voice shaking slightly as she looked up at him through the falling water of the sprinkler system.

Adrian walked down the grand staircase slowly, step by step, as if stepping into a dream or a nightmare. He stopped three feet away from her. He reached out his hand, his fingers stopping just short of touching her cheek—afraid she would dissolve into smoke.

"You're real," he whispered.

"I'm real," Elena said, a single tear slipping past her scar.

Suddenly, Adrian’s expression hardened. The grief that had consumed him for three years ignited into a white-hot fury.

"You let me bury a stranger," Adrian said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, dark register. "I spent three years tearing New York apart looking for the people who killed you. I laid flowers on a grave every Sunday. And you were alive."

"I had to, Adrian!" Elena cried, taking a step toward him. "You don't know what my father was planning! He didn't just want to hide me—he wanted to use our baby to seize control of your family's assets in Europe!"

"Your father said you asked him to fake the crash!" Adrian yelled, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings. "He said you wanted to keep my daughter away from me because I was a monster!"

Elena looked at him, her eyes filled with pain. "He lied to you! Just like he lied to me! He told me you were the one who ordered the hit on my car! He showed me surveillance photos of your men placing explosives under my vehicle in Boston!"

Adrian stared at her in utter disbelief. "I loved you! I would have burned this entire city to the ground before letting anyone touch a hair on your head!"

"I know that now!" Elena said, reaching out and grabbing his wet lapels. "I figured out his lie eighteen months ago! That's why he locked me away in that facility in Upstate! That's why I had Claire take our daughter and hide her here—in the one place my father would never think to look!"

From the end of the hallway, a small door creaked open.

Claire walked out, holding six-year-old Lily close to her side.

Lily looked at the flooded foyer, at the broken glass, and then at the dark-haired woman standing beside Adrian.

The little girl slowly let go of Claire’s hand and walked across the wet marble.

She stopped between Adrian and Elena, looking back and forth between them.

"See?" Lily said, pointing her tiny finger at Elena, then looking up at Adrian. "I told you she wasn't dead."
