Chapter 8 - The Final Account

The morning after the Commission Summit, the sun rose over Manhattan, painting the sky in pale shades of rose and gold.
The news of Marcus Vance’s arrest—along with forty high-ranking syndicate lieutenants across three states—dominated every television station in the country. The evidence handed over by Adrian and Elena had completely dismantled the Vance syndicate in a single night.
At the Kessler mansion, the grand foyer had already been cleared of debris. Teams of carpenters were busy repairing the heavy oak doors and restoring the marble tiles.
In the quiet second-story nursery, light flooded through the high arched windows.
Lily was sitting on a plush white rug, surrounded by new drawing books and colored pencils, happily drawing a picture of a large house with three people standing in front of it—one in a black suit, one in a dark dress, and one in a yellow dress.
Adrian stood near the nursery door, holding two cups of coffee.
Elena walked up beside him, leaning her shoulder against his. "She's been drawing for an hour."
Adrian handed her one of the cups. "She drew me with a giant smile."
Elena chuckled softly, taking a sip of her coffee. "You should try smiling in real life once in a while. It might suit you."
Adrian looked down at Elena, his expression serious. "What happens to Claire?"
"I spoke with her this morning," Elena said gently. "I offered her a permanent position managing the family’s new charitable foundation in Vermont. She's moving there next week with a full pension and legal immunity. She saved our daughter, Adrian. She deserves a peaceful life."
"She does," Adrian agreed softly.
He looked around the warm, sunlit nursery. For three years, this room had been locked—a silent tomb dedicated to a future he thought had been stolen from him forever. Now, it was filled with the sound of a child humming a playful song.
"I spent three years thinking about revenge," Adrian admitted, his voice quiet. "Every morning I woke up, I thought about the people who took you away from me. I thought that if I collected enough power, enough territory, enough money, the pain would stop."
Elena turned to face him, setting her coffee cup on a nearby shelf and taking his hands in hers.
"And now?" she asked.
Adrian looked through the open nursery door at Lily, who was currently trying to decide between a pink pencil and a yellow pencil.
"Now I realize that power doesn't mean anything if the house is empty," Adrian said, his dark eyes locking onto Elena’s with a warmth she hadn't seen in him since before the crash. "I don't want the syndicate war anymore, Elena. I'm stepping down from the family council."

Elena raised an eyebrow in pleasant surprise. "Dante will be shocked."
"Dante can run the commercial transport business," Adrian said with a faint smile. "He's better at dealing with the Commission than I am anyway."
