Chapter 4 - The Arraignment

The county courthouse was packed with reporters, media cameras, and former business associates by the time the bail hearing began at 2:00 PM. News of the high-profile attempt on my life had leaked to local news stations, sparking an absolute social media firestorm under the hashtag #CrestviewPoisoning.

I sat in the front row of the gallery, wearing a tailored navy suit, looking pristine, composed, and completely in control.

The side door opened, and Daniel was led inside by two bailiffs.

He looked horrifying. He was wearing an orange orange county jumpsuit, handcuffed at the wrists and ankles. His hair was messy, his eyes bloodshot, and his face sunken with terror. For the first time in his life, he didn't have his tailored suits, his expensive watches, or his arrogant smile.

When he saw me sitting in the gallery, his body shuddered. He looked at me with a desperate, pleading expression, as if expecting me to give him a soft look of sympathy.

I met his gaze with absolute stone.

Judge Eleanor Thomas, a notoriously tough senior magistrate known for her zero-tolerance policy on domestic violence, took her seat at the bench.

"State versus Daniel Vance and Vanessa Reed," Judge Thomas announced, reviewing the preliminary police reports and toxicological findings. "The defendants are charged with Count One: Attempted First-Degree Murder; Count Two: Conspiracy to Commit Murder; Count Three: Grand Larceny; Count Four: Wire Fraud."

Daniel’s attorney stood up instantly. "Your Honor, my client maintains his absolute innocence. He was a passive bystander to a tragic misunderstanding between two women. We request reasonable bail set at fifty thousand dollars so Mr. Vance can prepare his defense from home."

The prosecutor stood up next. "Your Honor, the State strongly requests that the defendant be held without bail as an extreme flight risk and an immediate danger to the victim. We have audio recordings proving pre-meditation, financial records proving motive, and physical evidence recovered directly from the scene."

Judge Thomas looked down at Daniel over her reading glasses, her expression filled with profound disgust.

"Mr. Sterling," Judge Thomas said coldly to Daniel’s lawyer. "Your client was caught on tape discussing the liquidation of his wife's assets following her anticipated death. The substance introduced into the victim's drink was a military-grade neurotoxin obtained illegally."

"Your Honor, my client has deep ties to this community—"

"Your client is facing life imprisonment without the possibility of parole," Judge Thomas cut him off sharply. "Bail is denied. Mr. Vance will remain in custody at the County Detention Center pending trial."

Daniel gasped loudly, dropping his head to the defense table. "No! Please! Claire! Talk to them!" he screamed, turning toward the gallery as the bailiffs grabbed his arms to escort him away. "Claire! I was manipulated! Vanessa made me do it! I love you, Claire! Please help me!"

I stood up slowly as he was dragged toward the holding cell door.

"You didn't love me, Daniel," I said, my voice echoing clearly through the courtroom so every reporter could hear. "You loved my money. And now, you don't even have that."

Daniel screamed as the heavy steel door clicked shut behind him, locking him away in the dark.
