Chapter 3 - The Financial Liquidation

The following morning, while Daniel sat in a county jail cell waiting for his arraignment hearing and Vanessa lay strapped to a hospital bed under legal detention, I went to work.
At 8:00 AM sharp, I walked into the glass-walled executive offices of Vance Capital Holdings—the wealth management firm Daniel had built over the last seven years.
Joined by my legal team and two uniformed officers serving court injunctions, I walked straight into the board room where Daniel’s senior partners were preparing for their morning meeting.
"Claire?" Thomas, Daniel’s primary business partner, asked in confusion, standing up from his leather chair. "What’s going on? Where is Daniel? He missed the quarterly review call."
"Daniel won't be attending any reviews today, Thomas," I said smoothly, dropping a thick stack of court orders onto the center of the mahogany conference table. "Or for the next twenty to thirty years."
Thomas stared at the papers. "What is this?"
"An emergency court injunction freezing all corporate accounts and revoking Daniel Vance’s executive authority," my lead attorney, Arthur Vance (no relation, but the finest asset manager in the state), declared. "Daniel Vance was arrested late last night for attempted first-degree murder, wire fraud, and grand embezzlement."
Gasps echoed across the board room. The partners looked at each other in sheer horror.
"Embezzlement?!" Thomas stammered. "From whom?!"
"From my private trust, and as our audit revealed forty-eight hours ago, from your firm’s client contingency funds," I stated clearly. "Daniel and his assistant, Vanessa Reed, have been funneling client investments into offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands to cover their personal gambling debts and real estate purchases."
I stepped up to the head of the table, placing my hands flat on the polished wood, looking at every partner in the room.
"As the primary guarantor of this firm’s original operating capital," I reminded them, "my father’s estate holds fifty-one percent of the voting shares in this building. Effective immediately, I am exercising my legal right to assume executive control of Vance Capital."
"You can't just take over!" one junior partner protested nervously.
"I can, and I have," I replied without a second of hesitation. "I am placing this firm into temporary receivership. The forensic auditors are already in the basement reviewing every transaction signed by Daniel over the last thirty-six months. Anyone who cooperates fully with the audit will keep their position. Anyone who attempts to delete files, hide records, or contact Daniel’s defense attorney will be named as a co-conspirator in federal court."
Within twenty minutes, Daniel’s executive office was sealed with police tape. His computers were seized, his personal safes cracked by court-appointed technicians, and his luxury sports car towed from the executive parking garage.
By noon, the financial fallout reached Daniel’s defense team.
His high-priced criminal defense lawyer, Richard Sterling, called my legal team attempting to negotiate a bail agreement or a quiet civil settlement before the news hit the press.
I put Sterling on speakerphone from my new office on the top floor.
"Mrs. Vance," Sterling began, his voice dripping with smooth, practiced persuasion. "My client is prepared to sign over all rights to Crestview Manor and relinquish any claims to your personal trust if you agree to drop the civil fraud charges and provide a favorable character statement for his bail hearing."
I let out a soft, amused chuckle.
"Mr. Sterling," I replied, leaning back in Daniel’s former executive leather chair. "Your client tried to put a lethal dose of liquid paralytic in my wine glass fourteen hours ago. Do you honestly think I care about a house I already own or money he already stole?"
May you like
"Mrs. Vance, if this goes to trial, it will ruin the firm's reputation—"
"The firm's reputation is already gone, Sterling," I cut him off cleanly. "Tell Daniel that his bail hearing is at two o'clock today. And tell him that I will be sitting in the front row of the courtroom wearing the exact dress I wore when his mistress tried to kill me."
