Chapter 1 - The Trap Springs

The quiet shattered glass on the marble floor glistened like spilled rubies under the dining room chandelier. Vanessa fell to her knees, gasping and coughing, her hand clawing at her throat as she wiped away burgundy wine from her chin.

Daniel stood frozen in place, his face drained of all color, looking back and forth between his gasping mistress and me.

"Claire..." Daniel stammered, his voice trembling as he took a tentative step toward me. "What... what did you just do?! Are you insane?!"

I didn't answer him immediately. Instead, I calmly reached into my skirt pocket, pulled out a pair of sterile latex gloves I kept in my purse for emergency evidence handling, and slipped them onto my hands.

With slow, methodical precision, I leaned down and picked up the tiny white foil packet lying near the wine bottle. I opened a small zip-top bag from my clutch, dropped the packet inside, and sealed it. Then, I pulled out my phone, turned on the camera, and snapped five high-resolution photographs of the shattered wineglass, the dark stain on the marble floor, and the chemical residue left on the silver spoon.

"Claire, stop!" Daniel yelled, grabbing my wrist. "What are you doing?!"

I turned my head, looking into my husband’s eyes with a stare so cold it made him instantly let go of my arm.

"Documenting a crime scene, Daniel," I said, my voice steady, sharp, and stripped of all affection. "A habit from my seven years as a senior homicide prosecutor with the District Attorney’s office. You remember that job, don't you? The one I stepped away from five years ago so you could build your executive firm?"

Daniel’s jaw trembled. He had forgotten. Over five years of quiet suburban life, cooked meals, and quiet support, Daniel had convinced himself that I was just a docile housemate who lived off his income. He had forgotten that before I wore silk dresses, I spent my days putting criminal masterminds behind iron bars.

"Claire... please, let's talk about this," Vanessa rasped from the floor, her voice panic-stricken as she felt the substance begin to take effect in her system. Her pupils were dilating rapidly, her skin turning flushed and slick with sweat. "I... I felt dizzy... What did you do to me?!"

"I didn't do anything to you, Vanessa," I replied coolly, stepping over her without looking down. "You poisoned a glass of wine intended for me. You forced a mouthful down your own throat when your plan failed. Whatever chemical reaction you are experiencing right now is entirely of your own making."

"You forced her!" Daniel shouted, rushing over to help Vanessa stand. She could barely hold her weight, her legs buckling as panic took over her mind. "You grabbed her hair, Claire! That’s assault!"

"It’s reasonable self-defense against an attempted assassination using an unknown controlled substance," I corrected him smoothly, pulling out my phone and dialing a three-digit emergency number. "And since you are both so eager to involve the authorities, let's let the police and emergency services sort it out."

"Wait! Don't call 911!" Daniel panicked, lunging across the table to grab my phone.

I stepped back with effortless agility, putting the phone to my ear as the dispatcher answered on the second ring.

"911, what is your emergency?"

"My name is Claire Vance," I spoke clearly into the line, keeping my eye locked on Daniel. "I am reporting an attempted poisoning at 1422 Crestview Manor. The suspect, Vanessa Reed, dropped an unknown illicit chemical into my drink. Suspect swallowed a portion of the substance during a physical altercation and is currently displaying signs of severe toxicity. I require immediate medical transport and criminal investigators on scene."

"No, no, no!" Daniel pleaded, dropping to his knees beside Vanessa, who was now shivering wildly on the floor, babbling incoherently as the illegal narcotics surged through her bloodstream.

"The ambulance and police units are en route, Mrs. Vance," the dispatcher confirmed. "Please remain on the line."

I lowered the phone slightly, looking down at my husband kneeling beside his mistress.

"You thought you were stealing my life, Daniel," I whispered as the distant wail of sirens began to ring through the quiet neighborhood streets. "You thought you were stealing my house, my accounts, and my dignity. But tonight, you just signed your own arrest warrant."
