Chapter 2 - The Interrogation Room

By midnight, the quiet elegance of Crestview Manor had been replaced by flashing red and blue lights, yellow police tape, and forensic investigators collecting evidence from our dining room floor.

Vanessa had been taken to the county hospital under police guard, her toxicological screen already revealing a dangerous, highly illegal cocktail of concentrated liquid sedatives and synthetic narcotics—a dose high enough to cause cardiac arrest or permanent neurological damage if consumed entirely.

I sat in a dimly lit interrogation room at the Metropolitan Police Department, wearing a blanket over my shoulders. Across the metal table sat Detective Marcus Miller—a former colleague from my prosecutor days who knew my legal reputation well.

"Claire," Marcus said softly, sliding a paper cup of hot tea toward me. "The lab results from the foil packet came back. It was a high-purity synthetic paralytic mixed with gamma-hydroxybutyrate. If you had drunk that entire glass of burgundy... you wouldn't have woken up tomorrow morning. They would have framed it as an accidental overdose or sudden heart failure."

My hands remained steady around the warm paper cup. I didn't break down. I didn't cry. The time for grief had passed the moment I saw that white powder fall into my glass.

"Where is Daniel?" I asked calmly.

"He’s in Interrogation Room B," Marcus replied, leaning back in his chair. "He’s maintaining that it was all a 'joke gone wrong.' He claims Vanessa brought the packet as a party prank and that you overreacted out of jealousy because you suspected they were having an affair."

I let out a short, cold laugh. "A prank that causes respiratory failure? Daniel always was a terrible liar when he wasn't rehearsing his speeches."

I reached into my handbag, pulled out a sleek silver flash drive, and placed it on the metal table between us.

"What's this?" Marcus asked, picking up the drive.

"That," I explained, "is three months of financial forensic audit reports compiled by Vance & Sterling Legal Forensics. It contains detailed transaction histories showing Daniel transferring over 1.2 million dollars from my private family trust account into offshore shell corporations registered under Vanessa Reed’s name."

Marcus raised an eyebrow. "Your private trust?"

"My inheritance from my late father’s estate," I clarified. "Daniel didn't have access to it legally, so he forged my signature on power-of-attorney documents two months ago. Furthermore, the flash drive contains audio recordings from security cameras I installed in our home three weeks ago after noticing suspicious activity."

Marcus slid the flash drive into his laptop. Within seconds, audio files began playing through the room’s speakers.

“Once she’s out of the picture,” Daniel’s recorded voice echoed clearly through the room, “the trust assets automatically transfer to my management as surviving spouse. We can liquidate the house by spring.”

“Are you sure the packet works?” Vanessa’s voice replied on the recording.

“My contact guaranteed it,” Daniel’s voice answered. “No taste, no smell, undetectable in standard blood panels unless they run a specialized tox screen.”

Detective Miller’s face went dead grim. He closed the laptop with a heavy snap.

"Intent to commit pre-meditated murder for financial gain," Marcus said softly, looking at me with immense respect. "They weren't just trying to get rid of a wife, Claire. They were executing a hit."

"And now," I said, standing up from the chair and smoothing down my skirt, "I want them both charged with attempted first-degree murder, conspiracy, grand larceny, and corporate fraud."

"We’ll hold Daniel overnight," Marcus promised, standing up with me. "With this evidence, a judge will deny bail by morning."

"Good," I said, looking out the two-way mirror toward the hallway. "Because tomorrow morning, I start tearing down his entire empire."
