Chapter 8

Alessia temporarily resigned as chair of the Carbone Relief Foundation.
She also took a voluntary leave from operational authority at Carbone Hospitality while outside counsel and independent forensic accountants reviewed every relevant transaction.
The family erupted.
Her uncle called it surrender.
A senior capo called it weakness.
Two cousins asked whether Garrett had finally frightened her.
Alessia answered none of them.
The decision was irreversible in the way that mattered.
Once the outside review began, Alessia could not quietly decide which records were family business.
Independent trustees received full authority over the foundation.
Outside counsel controlled document preservation.
Relevant suspicious transactions would be reported to regulators and law enforcement if the evidence required it.
No Carbone cleanup.
No private settlement first.
No phone call to make a problem disappear.
The cost arrived immediately.
A bank paused a pending hospitality loan.
Two sponsors suspended foundation commitments.
A newspaper began asking questions after Garrett’s court filing became public.
Several legitimate business partners demanded assurances.
Alessia lost millions in projected deals within two weeks.
She accepted it.
Miriam watched her sign the final governance transfer.
“You don’t have to do this because of me.”
“I’m not.”
“Then why?”
Alessia put down the pen.
“Because I hit Garrett in a ballroom full of people and he wants everyone to believe power means I control whatever comes next.”
She looked at her mother.
“I’m not giving him that argument.”
The independent audit immediately changed the investigation.
Garrett’s access was cut off.
So was Alessia’s.
Neither spouse could manipulate the files.
The first major forensic discovery came four days later.
A legal-strategy document had been created on Garrett’s laptop twelve days before the gala.
Not after Alessia punched him.
Before.
The document contained draft language for a separation petition.
It already described Alessia as “physically volatile.”
It already requested temporary restrictions around Carbone businesses.
It already proposed Garrett as a stabilizing operational figure.
One section was blank.
Incident supporting immediate protective relief: ______
Naomi stared at it.
Alessia felt cold.
May you like
Garrett had prepared the structure.
He had simply been waiting for an incident to fill the empty space.
