Garrett had used Miriam as bait.
That was the major truth.
The financial fraud came first.
Garrett’s private event venture was failing.
He had routed foundation money through inflated contracts linked to Evelyn’s trust, intending to restore the funds once his business recovered.
When it did not recover, he needed more time.
Miriam discovered the discrepancies.
Garrett could not simply remove her.
She was the foundation treasurer.
She had eleven years of credibility.
And Alessia trusted her more than any outside executive.
So Garrett began constructing two parallel stories.
One story said Miriam was old, confused, socially embarrassing, and resentful of Evelyn.
The second said Alessia was emotionally volatile, too controlled by her mother, and dangerous when challenged.
The gala was where he intended those stories to collide.
He invited independent witnesses.
He preserved the camera angle.
He prepared separation language before the marriage publicly broke.
He told Sarah Whitmore to watch Alessia’s temper.
He arranged Miriam’s social humiliation before the physical assault ever happened.
Then he crossed the line he believed Alessia could not tolerate.
He kicked her mother to the floor.
Evelyn knew what he was doing.
That was why she did not react with surprise.
Her role was to reinforce the humiliation.
Your mother should learn her place.
They expected Alessia to explode.
She did.
Garrett’s plan was not to win a fistfight.
It was to lose one where the right people could see.
Once Alessia struck him, he intended to seek emergency protective relief, portray her as unfit to manage legitimate institutions, and step into temporary operational authority while boards panicked.
During that window, he could restructure or delete internal records, settle certain vendor accounts, and attempt to cover the foundation shortfall before a true independent audit.
The plan was reckless.
It depended on judges, boards, and other people making choices Garrett could not fully control.
But desperate people often confused possibility with certainty.
The three earlier clues now became unmistakable.
The outside corporate witnesses had not been invited for philanthropy.
The fountain camera had not been kept clear for architecture.
And Garrett’s separation strategy had not been written because Alessia struck him.
It existed before she did.
Miriam was never merely the woman Garrett despised.
She was the trigger he chose because he understood Alessia’s love for her.
Naomi finished explaining the evidence in a private conference room.
Miriam sat beside Alessia.
Neither woman spoke for several seconds.
Then Miriam whispered:
“He wanted you to hurt him.”
Alessia looked at her.
“No.”
She shook her head.
“He wanted me to stop thinking.”
That distinction mattered.
Garrett had not controlled Alessia’s fist.
She had made that choice herself.
