Chapter 14

The first Carbone gala after the divorce was deliberately smaller.

Alessia nearly canceled it entirely.

Miriam told her not to.

“You don’t surrender a ballroom because one idiot fell into a fountain.”

“One?”

Miriam raised an eyebrow.

“Two, if we’re counting you emotionally.”

Alessia ignored that.

The fountain remained.

So did the silver banquet console, although the replacement was reinforced.

Naomi claimed that was an unnecessarily literal lesson.

Alessia claimed structural integrity mattered.

The new gala had one meaningful difference.

There was no privileged family seating decided by spouses or senior relatives.

Donors, staff leaders, trustees, and family members mixed.

Miriam’s place card was beside Alessia.

When she arrived, she moved it.

Alessia stared.

“What are you doing?”

“I’m sitting near the dessert table.”

“You’re supposed to sit here.”

“I’m sixty-four.”

“That is not an explanation.”

“I have spent my life sitting where important people think I should sit.”

Miriam picked up the card.

“Tonight I want cake.”

She sat three tables away.

Alessia let her.

That was progress.

The independent trustees later voted to return Alessia to the foundation chair if she wanted it.

She declined for another year.

Not because Garrett had been right about her volatility.

Because discovering she could surrender authority without disappearing had changed her.

Power no longer needed to mean occupying every chair.

After dinner, Sarah Whitmore approached.

“I owe you an apology.”

Alessia shook her head.

“For what?”

“I let Garrett tell me to watch you like you were a problem.”

“And then I punched him into a fountain.”

Sarah almost smiled.

“That did complicate my opinion.”

“It should have.”

Alessia appreciated people who could hold two truths at once.

Garrett had manipulated the scene.

Alessia had still chosen violence.

Accountability did not require pretending only one of those things mattered.

By midnight, the ballroom emptied peacefully.

No threats.

No broken tables.

No one on the floor.

Miriam took two desserts home in a paper box.

May you like

She claimed one was for breakfast.

Alessia knew both were.
