Chapter 10 - The Swan's Gift

I touched the small gold swan resting against my collarbone, tears of happiness welling in my eyes.

“Vincent... I came here five years ago just to clean your floors,” I whispered, laughing softly through my tears.

“And you ended up cleaning out the shadows in my soul,” Vincent replied, pulling me close and pressing his lips gently against mine in a long, sweet kiss that filled every corner of my heart with warmth.

“Ewww!” Ellie’s loud, squeaky voice interrupted us from the grass. “Mommy and Mr. Vincent are kissing!”

We pulled apart, laughing as Isabella and Ellie ran up onto the patio, the golden retriever barking playfully at their heels.

Isabella walked up to her father, taking his large hand in her small ones. She looked up at me, then down at the gold swan necklace around my neck.

“It looks pretty on you, Maya,” Isabella said smoothly, her voice held no trace of the quiet child who had sat frozen in therapy rooms six months ago.

“Thank you, sweetie,” I smiled, crouching down to hug her.

Isabella leaned in and whispered in my ear. “Are you going to be my mommy now?”

I looked over at Vincent, whose eyes were shining with hope, and then down at Ellie, who was nodding vigorously while chewing on a red apple.

“If you’ll have me, Bella,” I said softly. “I’d love nothing more in the world.”

Isabella wrapped her arms around my neck, hugging me tight. “I pick you.”
