Chapter 11 - The Voice of Home

That evening, as the sun dipped low over the horizon, painting the sky in brilliant shades of pink and orange, the four of us sat together on the wooden dock extending into Lake Michigan.
The cool water lapped softly against the wooden pilings beneath our feet.
Ellie sat between Vincent’s large legs, fast asleep against his chest, holding her gray stuffed rabbit. Isabella sat beside me, her head resting against my arm as we watched the stars begin to flicker in the darkening sky.
Vincent reached into his coat pocket one last time and pulled out the white porcelain swan music box.
He handed it to his daughter.
“Bella,” Vincent said gently. “You don't ever have to keep this if it brings bad memories.”
Isabella took the music box into her lap. She looked at the smooth porcelain swan, then at the brass winding key on the bottom.
She didn't look afraid anymore. The terror of Dominic, Luca, and the eleven months of silence was gone, replaced by the warm, safe reality of the family surrounding her.
Isabella turned the key three times.

She lifted the lid.
The delicate, beautiful melody began to play, filling the quiet evening air, drifting softly across the dark water of the lake.
Isabella smiled—a bright, dazzling smile that reached all the way to her dark eyes.
“It’s not broken anymore, Mommy,” Isabella said softly, looking up at me.

I pulled her closer, wrapping my jacket around her shoulders, looking across the water at the peaceful night sky.
“No, sweetie,” I whispered, kissing her cheek while holding Vincent’s hand tightly in mine. “It’s finally playing the right song.”
