Chapter 9 - The Rebuilding

Six months later.
The summer sun shone brightly over Lake Michigan, casting golden light across the manicured lawns of the Lake Forest estate.
The heavy iron security gates were still there, but they were painted a warm cream color now, flanked by blooming red roses and hydrangeas. The dark, brooding atmosphere that had hung over the estate for years had completely vanished.
On the back patio, a large wooden dining table was set with fresh flowers, platters of grilled chicken, and bowls of fresh fruit.
Eight-year-old Isabella and five-year-old Ellie were running across the grass, chasing a golden retriever puppy Vincent had bought them for Isabella’s birthday. Their bright, high-pitched laughter echoed across the lawn.
“Ellie! Catch him!” Isabella shouted in a clear, confident voice, laughing as the puppy tumbled over her sneakers.
I stood near the patio grill, tossing a fresh garden salad, wearing a comfortable white summer dress.
Vincent walked out from his study, wearing a simple linen shirt and dark trousers. The hard, terrifying edge of the Mafia boss was still visible in the sharp lines of his face, but his eyes were peaceful now.
He walked up behind me, wrapping his arms around my waist, resting his chin gently on my shoulder as we watched the girls play.
“The legal transitions are complete,” Vincent murmured near my ear. “The Commission is entirely dismantled. Federal prosecutors finalized the forfeiture papers this morning.”
I turned in his arms, looking up at his handsome face. “And your business?”
“Clean,” Vincent said, smiling faintly. “Legitimate logistics and real estate holdings only. No more shadow legal trusts. No more secret codes.”
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small velvet jewelry box.
My breath caught in my throat. “Vincent...”
He opened the box. Inside rested a delicate gold necklace with a tiny porcelain swan pendant—exact replica of the music box, but crafted in solid gold with a tiny diamond eye.
“I promised I’d give everything to the person who made my daughter speak,” Vincent said softly, his voice thick with emotion. “I gave the money to clinics and research funds, just like I promised.”
May you like
He took the necklace out, reaching around my neck to fasten the clasp.
“But my heart, Maya... that belongs to you and Ellie.”
