Chapter 20 - The Legacy

A year and a half after the fall of the Vance Syndicate, peace had become a permanent resident in the Gallow Tower. It was a quiet Sunday morning. The golden sunlight filtered through the massive windows of the Chicago penthouse. Victor was standing in the kitchen, wearing gray sweatpants and a tight black t-shirt, expertly making two cups of espresso. The terrifying mafia boss had become surprisingly domestic on the weekends. Harper walked slowly into the kitchen, wearing one of Victor’s oversized dress shirts. She wrapped her arms around his waist from behind, pressing a kiss to the center of his broad back. “Good morning, beautiful,” Victor smiled, turning around and handing her a small porcelain cup. “Morning,” she beamed, taking a slow sip of the perfect coffee. Victor leaned against the marble counter, studying her face. She looked radiant, glowing with a soft, peaceful energy that he still marveled at every single day. “Arthur called,” Victor mentioned casually, brushing a stray lock of hair behind her ear. “The acquisition of the shipping docks in Miami is complete.” “Our supply lines are completely legitimate now.” Harper smiled proudly, tracing the edge of his t-shirt with her finger. “So, you really are just a boring logistics manager now?” she teased playfully. Victor chuckled, pulling her gently by the waist until she was pressed firmly against him. “I am whatever you need me to be, Harper.” Harper looked up into his stormy gray eyes, her expression turning surprisingly serious. She placed her coffee cup onto the counter. Then, she took Victor’s large, scarred hand and placed it flat against her stomach. Victor froze completely. The air in the kitchen suddenly felt incredibly still. He looked down at her hand covering his, and then back up to her wide, tear-filled brown eyes. “Harper?” he whispered, his voice cracking with a terrifying, overwhelming hope. “We are going to need a bigger tower, Victor,” she smiled, a single tear escaping down her cheek. “I’m pregnant.” For a man who had survived assassinations, corporate warfare, and a lifetime of violence, this was the moment that finally brought Victor Gallow to his knees. He literally dropped to the floor, wrapping his strong arms securely around her hips. He pressed his face gently against her stomach, entirely unable to stop the tears from falling. He was going to be a father. He was going to bring a life into a world that he had finally made safe. Harper ran her fingers through his dark hair, crying softly as she held the most dangerous man in the city while he wept with pure joy. Victor slowly stood back up, lifting Harper effortlessly off the floor and spinning her around in the sunlight. He kissed her with a fierce, burning passion that promised a lifetime of absolute devotion. He had built an empire of shadows to survive. But she had brought the light, and together, they had built a legacy of love. The monster was gone, replaced entirely by the king who had finally found his home.
