Chapter 19 - The Expansion

Six months later, the shadows of the past had completely faded into memory. The Gallow Empire was thriving, expanding its legitimate holdings far beyond the borders of Chicago. Harper’s creative agency was now the most sought-after firm on the East Coast. They were currently hosting a massive launch party in a luxury penthouse in Manhattan. The room was filled with billionaires, politicians, and celebrities. Harper stood by the grand piano, wearing a stunning, backless emerald gown that clung perfectly to her curves. She was laughing easily with a group of influential investors, holding a crystal glass of sparkling water. Victor stood across the room, watching her from the shadows of the balcony. He was wearing a tailored tuxedo, looking like a terrifyingly handsome modern-day royalty. Arthur stood discreetly a few paces behind him, scanning the room for nonexistent threats. “She has completely conquered New York, sir,” Arthur observed quietly. Victor smiled proudly, never taking his eyes off his wife. “She conquers everything she touches, Arthur.” A wealthy, arrogant tech CEO suddenly approached Harper, leaning entirely too close to her as he spoke. He placed a hand casually on her lower back, completely unaware of the invisible sniper lasers that probably just locked onto his chest. Victor’s smile vanished instantly. His jaw clenched, and he took a slow, menacing step forward. Before Victor could cross the room to break the man’s fingers, Harper handled it herself. She smoothly stepped out of the man’s reach, offering a polite but freezing smile. She said something quietly to the CEO that made the color drain entirely from his face. The man immediately backed away, apologizing profusely before fleeing into the crowd. Harper caught Victor’s eye across the room and offered a wicked, triumphant wink. Victor let out a low, rumbling chuckle, stopping in his tracks. He didn't need to protect her from arrogant fools; she was more than capable of destroying them with a single sentence. Harper excused herself from the investors and walked gracefully across the ballroom floor toward her husband. The crowd naturally parted for her, recognizing the absolute power she wielded. She reached the balcony and slipped her hand seamlessly into Victor’s. “Having fun?” Victor murmured, kissing her knuckles gently. “It’s a bit boring without any assassins crashing through the ceiling,” she teased, leaning against his side. “I prefer boring,” Victor replied, wrapping his arm around her waist and pulling her flush against him. “I’m exhausted, Victor,” Harper admitted softly, resting her head on his shoulder. “Take me home.” Victor didn't hesitate. He gave a subtle nod to Arthur, signaling the immediate end of their evening. “Your wish is my absolute command,” Victor whispered in her ear. They walked out of the ballroom together, leaving the glittering high society behind them. They didn't belong to the elite class of billionaires or the dark underworld of criminals. They belonged entirely and exclusively to each other.
