Chapter 14 - The Blackout

The storm hit Chicago just after midnight. Fierce winds howled against the reinforced glass of the penthouse. Harper was lying in bed, staring at the ceiling, entirely unable to sleep. Victor was sitting in a leather armchair near the window, a disassembled heavy pistol on the table in front of him. He was cleaning the weapon with meticulous, rhythmic precision. Suddenly, the massive chandelier in the center of the bedroom flickered. A second later, the entire penthouse plunged into absolute, suffocating darkness. The low hum of the city outside vanished. The backup generators, which were supposed to kick in instantly, remained entirely silent. “Victor?” Harper gasped, sitting up quickly and pulling the silk sheets to her chest. The sound of a heavy magazine sliding and locking into a pistol echoed in the dark. “Stay exactly where you are,” Victor commanded, his voice eerily calm. The shadows shifted, and Harper felt Victor’s strong hand grip her arm in the darkness. He pulled her out of bed and pushed her gently toward the walk-in closet. “The electronic locks on the lower floors have been disabled,” Victor said, his tone purely tactical now. “Marcus has breached the building.” “How did he bypass the generators?” Harper whispered, her heart hammering violently against her ribs. “He built this tower,” Victor replied grimly. “He knows the blind spots.” The sound of heavy, muffled footsteps echoed from the marble hallway outside the bedroom doors. Arthur’s voice crackled over the emergency tactical radio strapped to Victor’s chest. “Boss, we have multiple hostiles on the forty-second floor,” Arthur reported through heavy static. “They used the maintenance shafts.” “Hold the elevator banks,” Victor ordered quietly into the radio. He turned back to Harper, pressing a cold, metallic object into her shaking hands. It was a compact, customized pistol. “Victor, I don't know how to shoot this,” she stammered in absolute panic. “Safety is off. Point it at the door and pull the trigger until it stops clicking,” he instructed, kissing her forehead fiercely. “Do not come out until you hear my voice.” Before she could argue, Victor stepped out of the closet and pulled the heavy wooden doors shut. Harper was left in the pitch black, gripping the heavy weapon with sweaty palms. Seconds later, the bedroom doors burst open with a deafening crash. The chaotic roar of suppressed gunfire shattered the silence of the penthouse. Harper clamped her hands over her ears, tears streaming down her face as the muzzle flashes illuminated the gaps in the closet doors. She heard men screaming. She heard the terrifying sound of glass shattering and furniture splintering. And then, she heard a heavy thud right against the outside of her closet door. Silence fell over the room once again. Harper held her breath, raising the shaking pistol toward the wooden panels. The doorknob slowly began to turn.
