Chapter 18 - The Aftermath

By dawn, the Gallow Tower was swarming with private cleaners and loyal security personnel. The police were paid off, the bodies were discreetly removed, and the damage was quietly repaired. In Victor’s world, the sun always rose over a spotless floor, regardless of the blood spilled the night before. Harper was sitting on the plush velvet sofa in her office on the forty-second floor, wrapped in a thick cashmere blanket. She was sipping hot tea, staring blankly at the rising sun over the Chicago skyline. The door opened softly, and Victor walked in. He had showered and changed into a clean black sweater and dark jeans. The cuts on his face were bandaged, and he moved with a slight limp, but the suffocating darkness that usually followed him was entirely gone. He looked lighter. He looked free. Victor walked over to the sofa and knelt on the floor in front of her. He gently took the teacup from her trembling hands and placed it on the glass table. Then, he rested his forehead against her knees, wrapping his strong arms around her waist. He simply knelt there, drawing strength from her warmth, breathing in the scent of vanilla that always anchored him to reality. Harper slowly reached down, running her fingers through his damp, dark hair. “It’s really over?” she asked softly, her voice raspy from exhaustion. Victor turned his head, resting his cheek against her leg so he could look up into her beautiful brown eyes. “Marcus is locked in a federal black site,” Victor confirmed quietly. “The syndicate is completely dismantled.” “No one will ever dare challenge us again.” Harper offered a weak, tired smile. “I ruined my favorite pajamas pulling that fire lever,” she mumbled playfully, trying to break the heavy emotional tension in the room. Victor let out a rough, choked laugh, a sound of pure, unadulterated relief. He stood up, towering over her, and then gently pulled her off the sofa and into his arms. He buried his face in the crook of her neck, holding her so tightly she could barely breathe. “You saved my life, Harper,” Victor whispered fiercely against her skin. “You saved my empire, and you saved my soul.” Harper wrapped her arms securely around his broad shoulders, holding her mafia king. “I told you, Victor,” she murmured lovingly. “We are partners.” “You protect me from the monsters in the dark, and I protect you from yourself.” Victor pulled back slightly, cupping her face in his large, warm hands. He looked at her with a level of absolute devotion that bordered on religious worship. “I am going to spend the rest of my life making sure you never have to touch a gun or pull a lever again,” Victor vowed solemnly. Harper smirked, her fiery spirit returning in full force. “Good,” she replied, tapping his chest. “Because I have a marketing campaign to launch tomorrow, and I cannot be distracted by your mafia drama.” Victor kissed her deeply, pouring every ounce of his love into the embrace. The war was finally over, and the Queen had undoubtedly won.
