Chapter 2 - The Rain and the Reckoning

The general manager fired Elise before she even made it back to the kitchen swinging doors.

She didn’t argue, simply untied her apron, grabbed her coat, and walked out the service entrance into the freezing Manhattan rain.

She had just reached the subway stairs when a black SUV pulled up to the curb, its tires hissing against the wet pavement.

The rear window rolled down, revealing Graham Mercer’s sharp, unreadable profile.

“Get in,” he said, his voice cutting through the traffic noise.

Elise tightened her coat around her shoulders.

“I just lost my job saving you a billion dollars, Mr. Mercer. I’m going home to sleep.”

“I will buy the restaurant and make you the CEO if you want,” Graham replied smoothly. “But right now, I need to know how a waitress in a Midtown steakhouse knows more about my corporate security than my entire executive board.”

Elise hesitated, the cold rain dripping down her collar.

She missed the thrill of the hunt, the adrenaline of unraveling a beautifully constructed lie.

She pulled the heavy car door open and slid into the leather interior.

“I wasn’t always a waitress,” Elise said as the SUV accelerated into the night.
