Chapter 9 - The Call Across the Ocean

At 11:30 AM, Laura sat on the open terrace of the base commander’s quarters, looking out over the quiet harbor of Praia da Vitória.

The storm had completely passed, leaving the ocean calm, deep blue, and shimmering under the warm island sun.

She pulled her personal smartphone from her pocket, connected to the base satellite Wi-Fi, and dialed a number in Madrid.

The line rang twice before a sweet, breathless ten-year-old voice answered:

"Mommy?!"

A wave of pure, sacred warmth washed through Laura’s entire soul, bringing tears of unburdened joy to her eyes.

"Hi, my sweet Maya," Laura whispered, her voice rich with maternal love.

"Mommy, Aunt Sarah showed me the news on the computer!" Maya said, her words tumbling out in excited, breathless bursts. "They said a brave lady pilot saved an airplane in a big storm! Was that you, Mommy?! Are you a superhero?!"

Laura laughed—a deep, musical, uninhibited laugh that echoed across the stone terrace like silver bells.

"No, sweetheart," Laura smiled, wiping a joyful tear from her cheek. "I’m not a superhero. I’m just your mom, and I’m on my way home to you."

"Did you bring my Spanish storybooks?"

"I have them right here in my bag, Maya," Laura promised. "And tonight, I am going to read every single page to you before bed."

"I love you, Mommy. Hurry home."

"I love you more than the whole sky, baby girl. See you soon."

Laura hung up the phone, holding it against her heart, feeling a profound, unshakeable wholeness that she had not felt in ten years.
