Chapter 19 - The Return to the Cockpit

One year after the night Flight 418 lost its hydraulics over the Atlantic.
At 6:00 a.m. on a crisp autumn morning, Laura Vance walked through the flight operations concourse of the newly restructured Sovereign Air Alliance at Boston Logan International Airport.
She wore her crisp new four-stripe Captainâs uniformâtailored navy wool, gold embroidered shoulder epaulets, and her silver Air Force wings pinned above her pocket.
She had officially accepted the position of Chief Pilot and Director of Flight Safety for the new international airline, dedicated to one hundred percent transparent, uncompromised passenger safety.
Walking beside her as First Officer was Marcus Cole, wearing his pilot uniform with proud, disciplined precision.
They stepped onto the flight deck of a brand-new, state-of-the-art Airbus A350-1000, designated Flight 1 â The Sovereign Horizon, bound for Madrid.
Laura sat in the left seat, adjusting her headset, her hands moving across the instrument panels with effortless, masterly muscle memory.
"Flight control check complete, Captain," First Officer Cole reported, smiling across the throttle quadrant. "All three redundant hydraulic systems indicating optimal pressure. Weather en route is clear across the entire North Atlantic."
Laura clicked the cabin intercom switch with a calm, gentle smile.
"Good morning, ladies and gentlemen, this is your Captain, Laura Vance, speaking from the flight deck," her warm, commanding voice carried to all three hundred passengers in the cabin. "Our flight time to Madrid today will be six hours and forty minutes. The skies ahead are smooth, our aircraft is in peak condition, and my crew and I are honored to have you aboard. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the flight."
In Row 1, Maya and Sarah sat side by side, looking out the window as the two massive Rolls-Royce Trent engines spooled up with a smooth, powerful, musical hum.

Laura advanced the throttles.
The aircraft accelerated down Runway 4R, lifting gracefully into the golden morning sky, climbing smoothly above the clouds into the brilliant, limitless blue.
