Chapter 7 - The Standing Ovation

The heavy armored cockpit door swung open.

When Laura Vance stepped out of the flight deck into the forward passenger cabin, the two hundred and eighty-eight passengers stood in absolute, paralyzed silence.

Then, the old Air Force colonel in row nine stood up, snapped to attention, and raised his right hand in a sharp, flawless military salute.

In less than two seconds, the entire cabin erupted into a deafening, thunderous roar of cheering, weeping, and standing applause.

Men in business suits wiped tears from their eyes, mothers held their crying children high in the air, and strangers embraced across the aisles in pure, overwhelming gratitude.

Sarah and the cabin crew rushed forward, wrapping Laura in a fierce, tearful group embrace, whispering endless prayers of thanks.

As Laura walked down the aisle toward the forward exit door, the corporate executive who had questioned her credentials bowed his head in deep, humiliated reverence, murmuring, "Forgive me, Commander... thank you for our lives."

Laura offered a gentle, humble nod, stepping out into the cool, fresh Atlantic night air.

Down at the base of the mobile passenger stairs stood the base commander of Lajes Air Base, Brigadier General Thomas Vance—an old family friend—flanked by twenty military officers and emergency physicians.

General Vance stepped forward, looking up at Laura with eyes full of quiet, unshakeable pride.

"I should have known it was you at the controls, Valkyrie," General Vance smiled warmly, offering a crisp, respectful salute.

Laura returned the salute with sharp, graceful precision.

"Permission to stand down, General," Laura smiled, the heavy weight she had carried for years finally lifting from her chest.

"Permission granted, Commander," General Vance replied. "Welcome to safety."
