Chapter 8 - The Airport Showdown

Panic erupted instantly throughout the crowded airport terminal as passengers screamed and dove for hard cover.
Patricia aimed the silver revolver directly at the center of my chest with terrifying, practiced precision.
"You should have just rotted in that jail cell, Ethan!" she shrieked over the deafening chaos.
Courtney abandoned the passports on the counter and grabbed my crying son from Patricia's arms.
"Take the baby and get on the plane right now!" Patricia ordered her terrified daughter.
I did not stop running, fueled entirely by the primal, unbreakable instinct to protect my family.
I dove recklessly forward just as Patricia pulled the heavy trigger of the shiny weapon.
A deafening gunshot echoed violently through the massive glass terminal, shattering the fragile peace of the morning.
I hit the polished floor hard, bracing for the agonizing, burning pain of a bullet wound.
But the pain never came.
I looked up and saw Courtney staggering backward, clutching her bleeding right shoulder in absolute shock.
She had instinctively stepped into the line of fire, accidentally taking the bullet meant entirely for me.
Patricia screamed in genuine horror, dropping the smoking gun as she watched her favorite child collapse to the floor.
Owen tumbled from Courtney's weakening grip, but I scrambled forward and caught his tiny body before he hit the tiles.
I pulled my screaming son tightly against my chest, shielding his fragile head from the absolute madness surrounding us.
Heavily armed airport police officers swarmed the boarding gate from every single direction.
They tackled Patricia violently to the ground, aggressively snapping heavy steel handcuffs onto her wrists.
Paramedics rushed to Courtney's side, applying thick pressure bandages to her bleeding, shattered shoulder.
I sat on the cold floor, rocking my beautiful boy and kissing his warm forehead over and over again.
The corrupt sheriff who had arrested me earlier suddenly pushed his way through the crowd of federal officers.
He tried to claim jurisdiction over the crime scene to protect Patricia, but he was immediately stopped.
The sympathetic officer from the jail walked up beside him, accompanied by two stern FBI agents.
"Sheriff, you are officially under federal arrest for accepting bribes and conspiracy to commit kidnapping," the FBI agent announced loudly.
They stripped the corrupt sheriff of his badge and weapon right in front of the entire stunned terminal.
The good officer walked over to me and knelt down, offering a warm, reassuring smile.
"Marcus sent us the audio recording of Courtney's confession, and we forwarded it directly to the federal authorities," he explained gently.
My name was finally and completely cleared of all the horrific, fabricated charges.
I stood up, holding my safe, healthy son, completely ready to go back to the hospital to see my wife.

As I turned toward the exit, a young hospital administrator rushed up to me with a terrified look on her face.
"Mr. Parker, I am so sorry, but your wife is no longer in her recovery room," she gasped breathlessly.
