Chapter 6 - The Inside Ally

I stared at the black burner phone resting perfectly on the metal tray.

My hands trembled violently as I picked it up and pressed the glowing power button.

The screen illuminated the dark, freezing cell, revealing a single unread text message.

"I know you are completely innocent, Ethan," the anonymous message read.

I quickly typed back, begging to know who was helping me and why.

The three small typing dots appeared on the screen for what felt like an absolute eternity.

"My name is Marcus, and I am Courtney's ex-boyfriend," the reply finally came through.

Marcus was the paramedic who had originally responded to my desperate 911 call earlier that day.

He explained that Courtney had called him in a drunken, panicked state shortly after I escaped the house.

She had brutally bragged about tying Hannah to the bed to prove she was tough enough to inherit the property.

Marcus was completely disgusted by her confession and realized Patricia had orchestrated a massive, illegal frame-up.

He sent me an audio file containing the recorded phone call of Courtney's entire twisted admission.

I pressed play and listened to my sister coldly describe exactly how they had tortured my wife.

The audio was undeniable, crystal-clear proof of their horrific conspiracy to destroy my family.

I walked over to the bars and showed the phone screen to the sympathetic officer who had delivered it.

He listened to the recording, his face hardening with genuine professional disgust.

"The sheriff has been taking massive bribes from your mother's real estate accounts for years," the officer whispered quietly.

He pulled a heavy ring of iron keys from his duty belt and unlocked my cell door.

"I am going to turn a blind eye, but you need to run right now before the sheriff returns," he instructed firmly.

I thanked him from the bottom of my heart and slipped out into the empty, dimly lit precinct hallway.

I found the evidence locker, broke the cheap padlock with a fire extinguisher, and stole my wallet and keys back.

I sprinted out the back emergency exit and disappeared into the rainy, freezing night.

I knew exactly where Patricia was hiding with my stolen son.

She owned a luxurious vacation cabin deep in the rural woods, completely disconnected from the main roads.

I stole a heavy pickup truck from a nearby gas station and drove recklessly toward the dangerous mountain pass.

I arrived at the cabin just as the sun began to rise over the dark pine trees.

I kicked the wooden front door completely off its brass hinges, ready to fight to the absolute death for my child.

The living room was completely empty, save for a single piece of paper resting on the glass coffee table.

It was a legally binding adoption decree signed by a corrupt family court judge, transferring full custody of Owen to Patricia.
